What is a LaTeX equation editor?
LaTeX is the typesetting language used for almost all scientific writing: \frac{a}{b} becomes a fraction, x^2 an exponent and \int an integral. A LaTeX equation editor renders that code as you type, so you can check an equation before putting it in a paper, a Markdown note or a web page. This editor uses MathJax 4 with the AMS math, mathtools, physics, braket, cancel, color and mhchem packages, the same rendering used by many journals and Q&A sites. The visual editor next to it shows the equation as editable math, which is a quick way to fix a misplaced brace.
How to render LaTeX online
- Type or paste LaTeX into the LaTeX box. Surrounding $…$, $$…$$ or \[…\] are removed automatically.
- Read the live preview. If the code has a mistake, the message (such as "Missing close brace") appears under the box.
- Click any symbol in the palette to insert its command, or search it by name: "less or equal" finds \leq.
- Copy the LaTeX in the format you need ($…$, $$…$$, \[…\] or an equation environment) or download the rendered equation.
Why render LaTeX here
- Real LaTeX, real errorsMathJax 4 renders standard LaTeX math and tells you exactly what is wrong, instead of a blank image.
- Every symbol, searchableThe palette shows each symbol with its command, so it doubles as a LaTeX symbol cheat sheet you can search.
- Visual and LaTeX, side by sideType math like text in the visual editor or write LaTeX directly. Both stay in sync, so you can learn LaTeX by watching it appear as you build an equation.
- Sharp at any sizeDownload SVG and PDF as true vector graphics, or PNG up to 8× for slides and print. Transparent backgrounds and custom colors are one click away.
- Private by designEquations are rendered by your own browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server, so unpublished research, exam questions and homework stay on your device.
- Edit exported images laterPNG and SVG files you save here keep their LaTeX inside. Open one with Open File and the equation comes back, ready to change.
When a LaTeX equation editor helps
- Papers and theses. Draft and check LaTeX for a paper in Overleaf, then copy it back with \[…\] or an equation environment.
- Checking AI output. Paste LaTeX from ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini to see whether it actually renders before you use it.
- Web pages and docs. Get $…$ for Markdown, Notion, Obsidian and GitHub, MathML for HTML, or an SVG with alt text for a blog post.
- Open a .tex or .md file. Open a document and pick any of its equations to preview, fix or export, without compiling the whole file.
- Worksheets and slides. Build equations for tests, worksheets and lecture slides, then paste them into Word, Google Docs or PowerPoint.
- Social posts and thumbnails. Export a large PNG with a transparent or colored background for a post, video thumbnail or presentation.
How to insert equations into Word, Google Docs, Canvas and more
- Microsoft Word
- Copy for Word, then paste. Word converts it to a native, editable equation. If you see code, choose Keep Text Only in the paste options.
- Google Docs and Slides
- Copy image (or download a PNG at 2× or 4×) and paste. Docs and Slides do not accept MathML or LaTeX.
- PowerPoint and Keynote
- Download an SVG for a sharp, scalable equation, or a transparent PNG.
- Canvas, Moodle and Blackboard
- Copy LaTeX and paste it into the LMS equation editor’s LaTeX or advanced mode, or insert a PNG with its alt text.
- Notion, Obsidian and GitHub
- Copy $…$ for inline math or $$…$$ for a display block. All three render LaTeX with KaTeX or MathJax.
- Overleaf and LaTeX documents
- Copy \[…\] or the equation environment and paste it into your .tex file.
- Email, Slack, Discord and forums
- Copy Unicode text for symbols that paste anywhere, or Copy image when the layout matters.
- Web pages and blogs
- Copy MathML for native browser rendering, or HTML <img> for an SVG image with alt text built in.

Writing documents with math
For whole documents, write in the Markdown editor with $…$ math and export with Markdown to PDF or Markdown to DOCX. To pull equations out of a PDF as text, try PDF to Markdown. For quick sums, use the percentage calculator.
Example: a Taylor series with an error fixed
Paste f(x)=\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}\frac{f^{(n)}(a)}{n!(x-a)^n and the editor reports a missing close brace. Add the } after n! and the series renders. Copy it as \[…\] for Overleaf, or as $$…$$ for a Markdown note.
What to expect from the result
The editor covers the math you would write in a LaTeX equation: AMS math, matrices, cases, colors, cancel, physics notation and chemistry with \ce{}. It is not a full LaTeX document compiler, so packages such as TikZ diagrams and document commands like \section are not supported. Handwriting and photo recognition are not included.
LaTeX Equation Editor questions
How do I render LaTeX online?
Paste the LaTeX into the LaTeX box. It is rendered as you type, in your browser. Download it as PNG, SVG or PDF, or copy it as MathML or an image.
Which LaTeX commands are supported?
Standard math mode plus amsmath and amssymb, mathtools, physics, braket, cancel, color, boldsymbol, \text, \newcommand and \ce{} chemistry from mhchem. Document-level commands like \section and packages like TikZ are not supported.
Why does my LaTeX not render?
The message under the LaTeX box names the problem. Common causes are a missing } or \right, an & outside a matrix or aligned block, or a command from a package that is not loaded.
Which formats can I export?
Downloads: PNG (1× to 8×), SVG, JPG and PDF. Copy: image, Word equation, LaTeX, $…$ inline, $$…$$ display, MathML, Unicode text, ASCIIMath, Typst, HTML with alt text, and spoken alt text.
Are my equations sent to a server?
No. The editor, the LaTeX renderer and every export run in your browser. There is no account and nothing you type is stored anywhere except your own browser’s recent-equations list, which you can clear.
