PDF, Markdown, and the Claude token-saving trend
The social-media advice to send only the words has a useful application: text-focused questions may not need a whole visual document. Anthropic’s documented PDF workflow combines extracted text with page images. It lists typical text usage of 1,500–3,000 tokens per page, with image tokens in addition. See Anthropic’s PDF support documentation.
For that workflow, sending a relevant text excerpt can avoid page-image tokens and reduce unrelated context. A 20-page document is not automatically 60,000 tokens. Actual usage varies, and API estimates do not predict a Claude subscription’s remaining messages. Markdown is not guaranteed to improve every answer; keep the PDF when figures or visual layout matter.
For broader document workflows, Microsoft’s MarkItDown offers local conversion of several formats. Pandoc is useful for Markdown export, but its documented input formats do not include PDF; the circulating PDF-to-Markdown Pandoc command is not a supported conversion.
Choose the right document workflow
Use this converter for text-based reports, meeting handouts, course notes, and project briefs. Review the extracted words against the source. For scanned pages, use an OCR tool first. To turn edited notes back into a shareable document, use Markdown to PDF. For an editable Word document, use Markdown to DOCX.
Why prepare PDF text before sending it to Claude?
A question about wording, requirements, or a checklist may only need a small part of a PDF. Extracting those pages gives you a chance to remove unrelated sections and review sensitive details before sharing. This browser tool has no Claude connection and sends no document content to an AI API.
How to use PDF to Markdown for Claude
- Open your PDF locally or try the demo to see how extraction works.
- Enter the pages relevant to your question and choose Convert to Markdown. Leave out unrelated appendices.
- Check names, numbers, and reading order against the original. Remove sensitive or unnecessary details.
- Copy a focused excerpt and paste it into Claude yourself, with a specific question and enough context.
A focused prompt from a project brief
Instead of sending a whole workbook for a question about deliverables, extract that section and ask: “Using these project notes, list the deliverables and any missing deadlines.” Include the original page or figure if the question depends on a chart.
What to expect from the result
Text extraction is not OCR or a lossless recreation of a document. Scanned pages, images, charts, and complex equations need another workflow. Multiple columns and tables can lose reading order. Heading detection and repeated header removal are heuristics; disable them if they change useful content. No guaranteed token reduction or AI-answer improvement is claimed.
PDF to Markdown for Claude questions
Does converting a PDF to Markdown save Claude tokens?
It can help when you only need text. Anthropic documents a PDF processing path that includes extracted text and page images. Sending relevant text can avoid the page-image portion, but savings depend on the document and workflow. This tool does not measure Claude tokens or predict subscription limits.
Does every 20-page PDF use 60,000 tokens?
No. Anthropic gives typical API text-token estimates of 1,500–3,000 per page plus image tokens for its documented PDF path. That corresponds to roughly 30,000–60,000 text tokens for 20 pages, not a fixed total. Actual usage and Claude app limits depend on the content and workflow.
Is Markdown always better than a PDF for Claude?
No. Text excerpts are useful for text-focused questions. PDFs can preserve essential charts, diagrams, visual relationships, and page context that text extraction loses. Choose the format that carries the evidence your question needs.
Does this tool send anything to Claude?
No. Conversion and editing happen in your browser. You decide whether to copy or download the result and share it with Claude. The AI service’s own data policies apply once you share content there.
Can it convert scanned PDFs, tables, and images?
It extracts an existing PDF text layer. Image-only scans need OCR and are reported as pages without text. Headings and lists are inferred; complex tables, columns, equations, and images require manual review and are not reliably reconstructed.
