What is an online 3D viewer?
A 3D viewer renders a model file so you can look at it from any angle without installing modelling software. This one uses WebGL in your browser and reads the common exchange formats: STL and 3MF for printing, OBJ and FBX from modelling tools, glTF and GLB for the web and AR, PLY for scans and point clouds, and Collada, 3DS, AMF and VRML for older pipelines. It shows materials and textures, plays embedded animations, reports mesh statistics and dimensions, and can export to STL, OBJ, GLB or PLY.
How to view a 3D file online
- Choose Open File and pick your 3D file (add its textures or material files too), or drag them onto the viewer.
- Drag to rotate, scroll or pinch to zoom, and right-drag or two-finger drag to pan.
- Switch between shaded, wireframe and X-ray, use the view buttons, or cut a section to see inside.
- Read the size, volume and triangle count, measure between two points, then export or take a snapshot.
Getting textures to show
- Select the model and all its texture and material files together (or drag the whole set) so the viewer can match them by name.
- For glTF, include the .bin file and the texture images; GLB already contains them.
- For OBJ, include the .mtl file named in the OBJ and the images it refers to.
- Any file that is missing is listed, and a blank texture is used in its place.
Why use this 3D Model viewer
- Many formats, one viewerSTL, OBJ (with MTL and textures), GLB, glTF, FBX, PLY, 3MF, DAE, 3DS, AMF and VRML. Draco and meshopt-compressed glTF work too.
- Measure, not just lookDimensions, triangle count, surface area, volume and a watertight check, plus click-to-measure distances and a section view.
- Export to other formatsSave the model as binary STL, OBJ, GLB or PLY, and take a PNG snapshot of the current view.
- Your model stays on your deviceFiles are read and rendered in your browser with WebGL. Nothing is uploaded, so unreleased products, client work and scans stay private.
Supported 3D formats
| Format | Files | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| STL | .stl | Triangles only (ASCII or binary); the standard for 3D printing |
| 3MF | .3mf | Modern print format with objects, colours and units |
| OBJ | .obj + .mtl | Text format from modelling tools; materials and textures in separate files |
| glTF / GLB | .gltf, .glb | Web and AR standard with PBR materials and animations |
| FBX | .fbx | Autodesk exchange format for animation and game engines |
| PLY | .ply | Scans and point clouds, often with vertex colours |
| Collada, 3DS, AMF, VRML | .dae, .3ds, .amf, .wrl | Older exchange and print formats |
Common uses
- Asset review. Check a model from a client, marketplace or AI generator.
- Format checks. Confirm textures and materials made it through an export.
- Animations. Preview rigged FBX and glTF animations.
- Quick conversion. Turn OBJ into GLB or FBX into STL.
More file tools: view SVG images as PNG, inspect photo metadata or convert images to ICO icons.
Example: checking an exported game asset
Open character.fbx with its texture images. The viewer lists 3 meshes, 2 materials, 4 textures and 2 animations; play “Walk” to check the rig, then export a GLB for the web.
What to expect from the result
Colour STL variants are shown when present. Volume and weight assume a closed mesh. Extremely large files are limited by your browser’s memory.
3D Model Viewer questions
Which 3D formats are supported?
STL, OBJ (with MTL), GLB, glTF, FBX, PLY, 3MF, DAE (Collada), 3DS, AMF and VRML (.wrl). Draco and meshopt compressed glTF files are supported.
Why is my model missing its textures?
Textures are separate files for OBJ, glTF and FBX. Open the model together with its images, and the .mtl or .bin file, so the viewer can find them.
Can I convert between 3D formats?
Yes. Export the loaded model as binary STL, OBJ, GLB or PLY. Materials and animations are kept in GLB; STL keeps only the geometry.
How large a file can I open?
It depends on your device’s memory and graphics. Models with a few million triangles open on most laptops; very large scans may be slow on phones.
Are my 3D files uploaded?
No. The viewer runs entirely in your browser using WebGL; the file is never sent to a server and the page keeps working offline once loaded.
