What is an FBX file?

FBX (Filmbox) is Autodesk’s format for exchanging 3D scenes between tools such as Maya, 3ds Max, Blender, Unity and Unreal. It can hold meshes, materials, skeletons, skinning and animations. This viewer reads binary and ASCII FBX version 7 files (FBX 2011 and newer), plays their animation takes, shows embedded or separately supplied textures and reports scene statistics. Export to GLB for the web or STL for printing.

How to open an FBX file

  1. Choose Open File and pick your FBX (add its textures or material files too), or drag them onto the viewer.
  2. Drag to rotate, scroll or pinch to zoom, and right-drag or two-finger drag to pan.
  3. Switch between shaded, wireframe and X-ray, use the view buttons, or cut a section to see inside.
  4. Read the size, volume and triangle count, measure between two points, then export or take a snapshot.

Getting textures to show

  • Select the model and all its texture and material files together (or drag the whole set) so the viewer can match them by name.
  • For glTF, include the .bin file and the texture images; GLB already contains them.
  • For OBJ, include the .mtl file named in the OBJ and the images it refers to.
  • Any file that is missing is listed, and a blank texture is used in its place.

Why use this FBX viewer

  • Many formats, one viewerSTL, OBJ (with MTL and textures), GLB, glTF, FBX, PLY, 3MF, DAE, 3DS, AMF and VRML. Draco and meshopt-compressed glTF work too.
  • Measure, not just lookDimensions, triangle count, surface area, volume and a watertight check, plus click-to-measure distances and a section view.
  • Export to other formatsSave the model as binary STL, OBJ, GLB or PLY, and take a PNG snapshot of the current view.
  • Your model stays on your deviceFiles are read and rendered in your browser with WebGL. Nothing is uploaded, so unreleased products, client work and scans stay private.

Supported 3D formats

FormatFilesTypical use
STL.stlTriangles only (ASCII or binary); the standard for 3D printing
3MF.3mfModern print format with objects, colours and units
OBJ.obj + .mtlText format from modelling tools; materials and textures in separate files
glTF / GLB.gltf, .glbWeb and AR standard with PBR materials and animations
FBX.fbxAutodesk exchange format for animation and game engines
PLY.plyScans and point clouds, often with vertex colours
Collada, 3DS, AMF, VRML.dae, .3ds, .amf, .wrlOlder exchange and print formats

Common uses

  • Asset review. Check a model from a client, marketplace or AI generator.
  • Format checks. Confirm textures and materials made it through an export.
  • Animations. Preview rigged FBX and glTF animations.
  • Quick conversion. Turn OBJ into GLB or FBX into STL.

More file tools: view SVG images as PNG, inspect photo metadata or convert images to ICO icons.

Example: checking a Mixamo animation

Open a Mixamo FBX. The animation list shows “mixamo.com”; play it to check the motion, then export a GLB that keeps the animation.

What to expect from the result

Colour STL variants are shown when present. Volume and weight assume a closed mesh. Extremely large files are limited by your browser’s memory.

FBX Viewer questions

How do I open an FBX file online?

Choose Open File and pick the .fbx (and any texture images), or drag them onto the viewer.

Can I play FBX animations?

Yes. Animation takes in the file are listed; choose one to play it.

Which FBX versions work?

Binary and ASCII FBX version 7 (FBX 2011 and later), which covers files from current versions of Maya, 3ds Max, Blender and Mixamo. Older FBX 6 files are not supported.

Can I convert FBX to GLB?

Yes. Choose Export → GLB; meshes, materials and animations are carried over.

Are my 3D files uploaded?

No. The viewer runs entirely in your browser using WebGL; the file is never sent to a server and the page keeps working offline once loaded.
