What is a discount calculator?
A discount calculator works out the price you pay after a percentage is taken off, and how much you save. Real deals are often more complicated than one percentage: “extra 10% off sale prices”, tax added at the till, or a tag that shows only the sale price. This calculator handles all three. Stacked discounts are applied one after another, which is how shops calculate them.
How to use Discount Calculator
- Enter the original price and the discount percentage in “Sale price after discount”.
- Add an extra discount if the deal says “extra X% off”, and your sales tax rate if tax is added at checkout.
- Read the sale price, the amount saved and the effective total discount.
- Use “How much percent off?” to check a price tag, or “Original price from sale price” to work backwards.
Discount formulas
- Sale price = Price × (1 − Discount ÷ 100)
- $80 with 25% off = 80 × 0.75 = $60.
- Stacked: Price × (1 − D1) × (1 − D2)
- 40% then an extra 20% = 0.6 × 0.8 = 0.48, so 52% off in total.
- Percent off = (Original − Sale) ÷ Original × 100
- $80 to $60 = 20 ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%.
- Original = Sale ÷ (1 − Discount ÷ 100)
- $60 after 25% off = 60 ÷ 0.75 = $80.

Example: 40% off plus an extra 20% with tax
A $150 jacket is 40% off, with an extra 20% off at checkout and 8.25% sales tax. Enter 150, 40, 20 and 8.25: the sale price is $72, you save $78 (an effective 52% discount), and you pay $77.94 with tax.
What to expect from the result
Stores may apply coupons before or after tax and round at different steps, so totals can differ by a cent. Dollar-off coupons and “buy one get one” offers are not percentage discounts; convert them to a percentage first with “How much percent off?”.

How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply the price by the discount as a decimal to get the saving, then subtract it. 25% off $80: 80 × 0.25 = $20 saved, so you pay $60.
How do stacked discounts work?
Each discount applies to the already reduced price. 40% off and then an extra 20% off leaves 0.6 × 0.8 = 48% of the price, which is 52% off in total, not 60%.
How do I find the percent off between two prices?
Subtract the sale price from the original price, divide by the original price and multiply by 100. $80 to $60 is 25% off.
How do I find the original price before a discount?
Divide the sale price by 1 minus the discount as a decimal. $60 after 25% off is 60 ÷ 0.75 = $80.
Is sales tax calculated before or after the discount?
In most US states sales tax is charged on the discounted price, which is how this calculator works. Some coupons and states treat it differently; check your receipt.
