What happens when you convert ICO to PNG?
An ICO file is a container: it usually holds the same icon at several sizes and sometimes at several colour depths. Converting ICO to PNG therefore means choosing which image you want. This tool reads the icon directory, decodes every image (both the classic bitmap kind with 1, 4, 8, 24 or 32-bit colour and the newer PNG-compressed kind) and shows them side by side with their size and bit depth. Download the one you need, or all of them as a ZIP.
How to convert ICO to PNG
- Choose Open File and pick an .ico (or .cur) file, or drag it onto the page.
- Review the list of images found inside, largest first.
- Download a single PNG, or all of them as a ZIP.
Good to know
- The largest image is listed first; it is usually the best one to reuse.
- Old icons may contain 16-colour or 256-colour versions; pick the 32-bit one for the best quality.
- Need a bigger PNG? Icons cannot hold more than 256 × 256 px, so upscaling will look soft.
- To make a new ICO from the PNG, switch to Image → ICO.
Why use this ICO to PNG converter
- Nothing hiddenEvery image in the file is shown, including old 4-bit and 8-bit versions.
- True transparency32-bit alpha and the classic 1-bit mask are both turned into PNG transparency.
- Exact pixelsImages are extracted at their stored size, not resized.
- Private by designYour image is converted on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server, so logos and unreleased artwork stay private.
Common uses
- Reuse a favicon. Get a PNG of a site icon for docs or slides.
- Recover artwork. Extract the 256 px image from an app icon.
- Check an icon. See which sizes an ICO really contains before shipping it.
- Cursors. Extract images from .cur cursor files.
Need something else? Build an icon from an icon library with the favicon generator, convert SVG to PNG, or resize an image first.
Example: favicon.ico to PNG
Open favicon.ico from a website. The tool lists 48 × 48, 32 × 32 and 16 × 16 images; download the 48 px PNG or all three as a ZIP.
What to expect from the result
Cursor hotspots are not kept in the PNG. Icon files larger than 50 MB are not supported. ICO images can be at most 256 × 256 px, so no larger PNG can be extracted.
ICO to PNG Converter questions
How do I convert ICO to PNG?
Open the ICO file. Every image inside is listed with its size; select Download PNG for the one you want, or Download all as ZIP.
Why does my ICO contain several images?
Windows and browsers pick the size that fits where the icon is shown, so ICO files usually include several sizes and sometimes several colour depths.
Is transparency kept when converting ICO to PNG?
Yes. Both 32-bit alpha channels and the 1-bit transparency masks in older icons become transparent pixels in the PNG.
Can I convert CUR cursor files?
Yes. CUR files use the same structure as ICO, so their images can be extracted the same way. The cursor hotspot is not stored in PNG.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your browser with JavaScript and the canvas API. Your file never leaves your device and works offline once the page has loaded.
