How JPG to ICO conversion works

JPG photos are rarely square and never transparent, so turning one into a good icon takes more than a format change. This converter can crop the centre of your photo to a square (Fill), fit the whole picture with padding (Fit), and round the corners so the icon looks finished in a taskbar or browser tab. Each size from 16 to 256 px is resampled from the full-resolution photo and stored in a standard ICO file.

How to convert JPG to ICO

  1. Choose Open File and pick your JPG (or drag it onto the page or paste it).
  2. Pick a size preset or tick the exact sizes you need.
  3. Adjust fit, padding, background and rounded corners while watching the previews.
  4. Download the .ico file, or a ZIP of PNGs for every size.

ICO sizes and where they are used

SizeWhere it appears
16 × 16Browser tabs, bookmarks and the Windows title bar and small icon view
24 × 24Windows Explorer details view and some toolbars
32 × 32Windows taskbar, desktop at small scale, high-DPI browser tabs
48 × 48Windows desktop and Explorer medium icons, Google search results favicon
64 × 64High-DPI medium icons
128 × 128Large icons on high-DPI screens
256 × 256Windows large and extra-large icons, Start menu tiles; the largest size ICO allows

Windows scales the nearest size when an exact match is missing, so including 16, 24, 32, 48 and 256 px covers most displays.

Tips for a sharp icon

  • Use Fill to crop a rectangular photo to a centred square.
  • Faces and simple objects work best: at 16 px only the main shape is visible.
  • Rounded corners at 20–25% give an app-like look and hide the hard JPG edges.
  • If the JPG has a white background, use Fit with no corners for a clean square icon.

Why use this JPG to ICO converter

  • Every size in one filePack 16, 24, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 px versions into a single .ico, so Windows and browsers always pick a sharp one.
  • Sharp small sizesEach size is resampled in stages from the original, which keeps 16 and 32 px icons cleaner than a single resize.
  • See it before you downloadPreview every size on a transparent grid and in a light and dark browser tab.
  • Private by designYour image is converted on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server, so logos and unreleased artwork stay private.

Common uses

  • Website favicon. Create favicon.ico for the site root and older browsers.
  • Windows shortcuts. Give a desktop shortcut or folder a custom icon.
  • App and installer icons. Make the .ico that Electron, .NET and installer builders ask for.
  • Game and mod icons. Package icons for launchers and mods that require ICO.

Need something else? Build an icon from an icon library with the favicon generator, convert SVG to PNG, or resize an image first.

Example: a profile photo as a desktop icon

Open a 3000 × 2000 px JPG, choose Fill and 22% corners, and keep the default sizes. The centre of the photo is cropped to a square and every size is resampled from the full image.

What to expect from the result

JPG has no transparency. Areas outside rounded corners or padding become transparent unless you choose a background colour. ICO images can be at most 256 × 256 px.

JPG to ICO Converter questions

How do I convert a JPG to an ICO file?

Open the JPG, choose Fill to crop it to a square or Fit to keep the whole picture, then select Download .ico.

Can a JPG icon have a transparent background?

The photo itself cannot, but rounded corners and padding are transparent in the ICO. To remove a photo background, use a background remover first and convert the PNG.

Is JPEG to ICO the same as JPG to ICO?

Yes. JPG and JPEG are the same format with different file extensions; both work here.

What sizes should an ICO file contain?

For a favicon, 16, 32 and 48 px is enough. For a Windows app or shortcut icon, Microsoft recommends at least 16, 24, 32, 48 and 256 px. ICO images can be at most 256 × 256 pixels.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your browser with JavaScript and the canvas API. Your file never leaves your device and works offline once the page has loaded.
