PNG stores every pixel losslessly, which is exactly what you want for logos, screenshots and anything with sharp edges — and exactly what makes a photograph saved as PNG several times larger than it needs to be. A 6 MB PNG photo typically becomes a 400–800 KB JPG that looks identical on screen.
That size difference is why upload forms cap you at 2 MB, why email attachments bounce, and why a folder of PNG camera exports fills a drive. JPG is also the one format nothing has ever refused: every editor, office suite, marketplace, print shop and portal accepts it.
One thing to know before converting: JPG has no transparency. Any transparent area in your PNG is flattened onto a white background here, which is the right result for screenshots and photos but not for a logo you intend to place over colour. Keep the PNG in that case.

JPG is lossy, so there is one generation of compression. At 85–90% the result is visually identical to the PNG for photographs and screenshots. Text and hard edges — UI screenshots, diagrams, logos — are where JPG artifacts show first, so keep those as PNG if they need to stay crisp.
They are filled with white, because JPG has no alpha channel. If your PNG is a logo or sticker that needs to sit on a coloured background, converting it to JPG will give you a white box around it — keep the PNG, or convert to WebP instead, which supports transparency and is still small.
For photographs, usually a small fraction of the PNG's size. For flat-colour screenshots the saving is much smaller, and occasionally a simple screenshot is already smaller as a PNG — the tool shows both sizes after converting, so you can check before you keep the result.
