Can you use a downloaded YouTube thumbnail?
Thumbnails are publicly accessible images, and saving one for personal reference is common practice. They are still copyrighted by the creator. Reusing a thumbnail in your own video, website or advertising generally needs the creator's permission, unless your use falls under fair use or fair dealing, such as commentary, criticism or news reporting.

What is the highest resolution YouTube thumbnail I can download?
1280 × 720 pixels (maxresdefault.jpg). YouTube doesn't store larger thumbnails, even for 4K videos. Sites offering 1080p or 4K thumbnails are upscaling the 720p image.
Why is the HD (max resolution) thumbnail missing?
YouTube only creates maxresdefault.jpg for some videos, typically HD uploads or videos with a custom thumbnail. Older or low-resolution videos may top out at 640 × 480 (SD). This tool only lists sizes that really exist.
Can I download thumbnails from YouTube Shorts?
Yes. Paste the Shorts link (youtube.com/shorts/…). YouTube stores Shorts thumbnails at the same standard sizes, usually as a 16:9 frame from the vertical video.
