What is a barcode generator?
A barcode generator turns a number or text into the pattern of bars (or squares, for 2D codes) that a scanner reads. This generator supports retail barcodes (UPC-A, UPC-E, EAN-13, EAN-8 and ISBN), shipping and inventory barcodes (Code 128, GS1-128, Code 39, Code 93, ITF-14, Interleaved 2 of 5 and Codabar) and 2D codes (Data Matrix, GS1 DataMatrix, PDF417, Aztec and QR Code). It validates your input, calculates check digits, shows the printed size, and exports high-resolution PNG, vector SVG, ZIP files or Avery label sheets. Barcodes are drawn with the open-source Barcode Writer in Pure PostScript engine, entirely in your browser.
How to create a barcode
- Choose the barcode type. Use Code 128 for inventory and internal labels, UPC or EAN for retail products.
- Type the number or text. Check digits are added or verified automatically, and errors explain what to fix.
- Adjust the bar width, height, text and colours. The printed size is shown under the preview.
- Download a PNG for documents and labels, an SVG for professional printing, or switch to Bulk & label sheets for many barcodes.
Which barcode type should I use?
- UPC-A and EAN-13 are for retail products. Official numbers come from GS1; a made-up number may clash with someone else’s product.
- Code 128 is the best general-purpose choice for inventory, asset tags and shipping, and encodes letters, digits and symbols.
- Code 39 is older but still required by some industries and government systems; it supports capital letters and digits only.
- Data Matrix and QR Code are 2D: they hold far more data in a small square and can be read by phone cameras.
Why use this barcode generator
- No email, no account, no watermarkMany barcode sites ask for an email before the download. Here the image is created on your device and saved straight away.
- Print-ready sizesChoose the bar width in millimetres and 150–600 DPI, see the printed size before you download, or take a vector SVG.
- Check digits handled for youUPC, EAN, ISBN and ITF-14 check digits are calculated or verified, with a clear message if a number is wrong.
- Bulk and label sheetsPaste a column from Excel and get a ZIP of images or a PDF laid out on Avery 5160, 5163, L7160 and other sheets.
Common uses
- Inventory and stock. Code 128 labels for shelves, bins and SKUs.
- Small business products. UPC-A or EAN-13 artwork for packaging, with your GS1 number.
- Asset tags. Number laptops, tools and equipment with bulk label sheets.
- Shipping cartons. ITF-14 and GS1-128 for cases and pallets.
Need a code people scan with their phone? Use the QR code generator or the Wi-Fi QR code generator. Pair labels with a UUID or random number generator for unique IDs.
Example: shelf labels for a small shop
Choose Bulk & label sheets and Code 128, then paste two columns from your spreadsheet: SKU-1001,Blue mug SKU-1002,Red mug Select Avery 5160 and Download label sheet PDF. Print at 100% on the label sheet and each label shows the barcode with the product name underneath.
What to expect from the result
This tool creates barcode images; it does not issue product numbers. Retailers and marketplaces require UPC/EAN numbers licensed from GS1. Always test-scan a printed sample, especially at small sizes, on coloured backgrounds or with low-quality printers.
Barcode Generator questions
Is this barcode generator really free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no email, no watermark and no limit. Barcodes are generated on your device and downloaded directly.
Can I use these barcodes on products I sell?
You can use the images commercially. For retail products, the number itself must be a valid GTIN licensed from GS1 (or provided by your retailer); the generator encodes whatever number you supply.
Which format should I download, PNG or SVG?
Use SVG for printing at any size and for designers, because it is vector. Use PNG at 300 or 600 DPI for Word, Google Docs and label printers.
How do I make many barcodes at once?
Switch to Bulk & label sheets, paste one value per line (optionally with a label after a comma), then download a ZIP of images or a PDF on Avery label sheets.
Why won’t my barcode scan?
Common causes are printing too small, low contrast (light bars or a dark background), red bars, missing quiet zones, or a blurry printer. Increase the bar width, use black on white and keep the quiet zone on.
