What is an EAN-13 barcode?
EAN-13 is the retail barcode used in Europe and most of the world outside North America. Its 13 digits are a GS1 prefix (often indicating the country of the issuing GS1 office), a company and item number, and a check digit. EAN-8 is a shorter 8-digit version for very small packs. Scanners in the US read EAN-13 as well. Enter 12 digits to have the check digit added, or all 13 to verify it, and export at the standard 0.33 mm bar width.
How to make an EAN-13 barcode
- Choose EAN-13, or EAN-8 for very small packages.
- Enter 12 digits (EAN-13) or 7 digits (EAN-8) and the check digit is added, or the full number to verify it.
- Keep the 0.33 mm bar width for the standard size.
- Download SVG for packaging artwork or PNG for labels.
UPC sizing and check digits
- The 12th digit is a check digit: multiply odd-position digits by 3, add the even-position digits, and take the amount needed to reach the next multiple of 10.
- Standard (100%) UPC-A uses 0.33 mm bars. Retailers accept 80–200%; smaller is harder to scan.
- Leave white space (quiet zone) on both sides; the generator adds it automatically.
- Do not change the bar height much: truncating the bars is a common reason for retailer rejections.

Need a code people scan with their phone? Use the QR code generator or the Wi-Fi QR code generator. Pair labels with a UUID or random number generator for unique IDs.
Example: complete an EAN-13
Enter 590123412345 (12 digits). The check digit 7 is calculated and the barcode encodes 5901234123457.
What to expect from the result
This tool creates barcode images; it does not issue product numbers. Retailers and marketplaces require UPC/EAN numbers licensed from GS1. Always test-scan a printed sample, especially at small sizes, on coloured backgrounds or with low-quality printers.
EAN-13 Barcode Generator questions
What is the difference between EAN and UPC?
A UPC-A is a 12-digit code used mainly in North America; an EAN-13 is 13 digits. A UPC can be written as an EAN-13 by adding a leading 0, and modern scanners read both.
How do I get an EAN-13 number?
From your national GS1 office. The generator creates the barcode image for a number you already have.
Does the first digits show the country of origin?
No. The prefix shows which GS1 office issued the number, not where the product was made.
When should I use EAN-8?
Only for packages too small for EAN-13, and only with an EAN-8 number issued by GS1.
How is the UPC check digit calculated?
Multiply the digits in odd positions by 3, add the digits in even positions, and the check digit is whatever brings the total up to a multiple of 10. Enter 11 digits and it is done for you.
