What is a double elimination bracket?

A double elimination bracket is a tournament where a team is only out after its second loss. Everyone starts in the winners bracket. Losing there drops a team into the losers bracket, where a second loss ends its run. The winners bracket champion and the losers bracket champion meet in the grand final. Because the losers bracket team has already lost once, many events play a reset: if the losers bracket team wins the first grand final, a second game decides the title. With n teams that is 2n minus 2 games, or 2n minus 1 with a reset. Esports, softball, wrestling and pool leagues use it because one bad game does not end a team’s day.

How to make a double elimination bracket

  1. Enter the teams in seed order, or paste them and press Shuffle for a random draw.
  2. Keep Double elimination selected. Leave Grand final reset on for true double elimination, or turn it off for a single grand final.
  3. Click winners in the winners bracket. Each loser drops into the losers bracket automatically, placed to avoid an immediate rematch.
  4. Keep clicking until the grand final is decided, then download the PDF or PNG or copy a share link.

Why use this double elimination bracket generator

  • The whole bracket, filled in for youLosers drop into the right place in the losers bracket the moment you pick a winner, so you never have to work out where "loser of game 9" goes.
  • Correct seeds and byesByes go to the top seeds, seeds 1 and 2 can only meet in the final, and every game is numbered so players know where to go next.
  • True double eliminationThe grand final reset is on by default, so the winners bracket champion also has to lose twice. Turn it off if your event plays one final.
  • Click winners to advancePick winners right on the bracket. Changing an earlier result clears only the games it affects, and Undo puts things back.
  • Print, save or shareDownload a vector PDF for the wall, a PNG for the group chat, or copy a link that carries the whole bracket and its results.
  • No account, nothing sent anywhereThere is no sign-up, email or limit. Names and results stay in your browser and are saved on this device automatically.

Who uses double elimination

  • Esports and gaming. Double elimination with a grand final reset is the standard for fighting games, Rocket League and most community events.
  • Leagues and youth sports. Seed teams by record for playoffs, or run a round robin pool before the knockout games.
  • Game night and parties. Mario Kart, beer pong, Jenga, trivia or board games. Paste the names, shuffle, and tap winners as you play.
  • Office tournaments. Ping pong, FIFA, cornhole or chess at lunch. Share one link in Slack or Teams and print a copy for the break room.
  • Pool, darts and cornhole leagues. Bar leagues and weekend events use double elimination so every team plays at least twice.
  • Classrooms and clubs. Debate, spelling bees, chess clubs and sports days. Project the bracket on the board and click winners live.

How seeding, byes and results work

  • Seeding: the first name in the list is seed 1, the second is seed 2 and so on. Seeds are placed so that 1 and 2 can only meet in the final, 1 to 4 only in the semifinals, and so on. Press Shuffle for a random draw.
  • Byes: when the number of teams is not 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 or 128, the bracket grows to the next of those sizes. The empty places are byes and go to the top seeds, who start in round two. Bye games are hidden, so you only see games that are really played.
  • Game numbers: every real game has a number, and empty places say where their team comes from, such as "Winner of 3" or "Loser of 5". This makes printed brackets easy to follow.
  • Changing results: click a winner again to take the pick back, or pick the other team. Later games that depended on that result are cleared, and Undo brings them back.
  • Double elimination: losers drop into the losers bracket in an order that avoids an immediate rematch. With the reset on, the grand final is played a second time only if the losers bracket team wins the first one.
  • Round robin standings: 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw by default. Teams level on points are split by their head-to-head result (when exactly two are tied), then score difference, then scores for, then wins.

Example: a 6-team double elimination bracket

Six teams use an 8-place bracket, so seeds 1 and 2 get byes in the winners bracket. The two first-round losers meet in losers round one, the other losers drop in as the winners bracket goes on, and the losers bracket champion meets the unbeaten team in the grand final. That is 10 games, or 11 if the grand final is reset.

What to expect from the result

Single and double elimination take 2 to 128 players and round robin takes 2 to 32. There are no sign-ups, check-ins, Swiss rounds or live updates for spectators. A share link is a snapshot of the bracket when you copied it. The PDF uses standard fonts, so names in scripts such as Chinese, Arabic or Cyrillic may not print correctly; the PNG shows them fine.

Double Elimination Bracket Generator questions

How does a double elimination bracket work?

Every team starts in the winners bracket. A loss there sends the team to the losers bracket, and a loss in the losers bracket knocks it out. The last unbeaten team plays the losers bracket winner in the grand final.

How many games are in a double elimination tournament?

2n minus 2 games for n teams when the unbeaten team wins the grand final, and 2n minus 1 when the grand final is reset. 8 teams play 14 or 15 games, 16 teams play 30 or 31.

What is a grand final reset?

The team from the losers bracket has already lost once, while the winners bracket team has not lost at all. If the losers bracket team wins the grand final, both teams now have one loss, so a second game is played to decide the champion. This is also called a bracket reset or true double elimination.

Why does the losers bracket have more rounds?

The losers bracket takes in new teams from every round of the winners bracket. It alternates between rounds where new losers drop in and rounds where the remaining losers bracket teams play each other, so it needs about twice as many rounds.

How does the bracket handle byes?

When the number of players is not 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 or 128, the bracket grows to the next of those sizes and the empty places become byes. Byes go to the top seeds, so with 6 players seeds 1 and 2 skip the first round. A bye is never paired with another bye.
