What is a Secret Santa generator?
A Secret Santa generator draws names for a gift exchange so that each person secretly buys a present for one other person. It replaces pulling names out of a hat: nobody draws their own name, couples or housemates can be kept apart, and people who are not in the same room can still take part. This generator runs entirely in your browser. Each participant receives a personal link that shows only their own match, and the names are never saved to a server or sent by us to anyone.
How to use Secret Santa Generator
- Type or paste everyone’s names, one per line. Use a surname initial if two people share a first name.
- Add rules for people who should not draw each other, such as couples. Keep “No two people buy for each other” on for more surprise.
- Optionally add the event name, budget, exchange date and a message. They appear on everyone’s reveal.

How the draw and private links work
- Exclusions work both ways: if Alex and Sam are excluded, neither draws the other.
- “No two people buy for each other” stops A→B and B→A pairs, which keeps more of the surprise.
- “One big gift circle” links everyone into a single chain, which is fun to reveal in order on the day.
- The draw uses your browser’s cryptographic random generator and picks uniformly among all valid arrangements. Only for very tightly restricted groups does it fall back to a randomised search to find a valid draw.
- Personal links contain their own details in the part of the address after “#”, which browsers do not send to web servers. We also clear it from the address bar before our analytics loads. The organiser’s device keeps the draw in local storage so links can be resent; use “Forget this draw” to remove it.

Need something other than a gift exchange? Split people into random teams, pick a winner with the wheel of names, or draw numbers with the random number generator.
Example: a family of eight with two couples
Enter eight names, add two rules (Alex ↮ Sam and Jordan ↮ Taylor), set a $30 budget and 24 December as the exchange date, then press Draw names. Send each person their link in the family chat. Everyone sees only their own match, the budget and the date. If someone loses their link, open the page on the organiser’s device and copy it again.
What to expect from the result
Links reveal only one match, but they are not password-protected: anyone who is sent a link can open it, so send each link only to its owner. The organiser can see all matches if they choose to. There are no wish lists, reminders or anonymous chat, because nothing is stored online. Up to 200 people can take part.

How does this Secret Santa generator work?

Do participants need an email address or account?
No. Nobody signs up and no email addresses are collected. You share each person’s link however you like: WhatsApp, text, Slack, Teams or email.
Can I stop couples from drawing each other?
Yes. Add a rule for each couple. Rules work in both directions, and the generator tells you if the rules make a draw impossible.
Can the organiser take part without seeing everyone’s match?
Yes. Matches are hidden by default, and the private links only show one match each. Just avoid pressing “Show all matches” or opening other people’s links.
Is my Secret Santa list stored online?
No. The names and the draw stay on the organiser’s device, in this browser’s local storage, so links can be copied again later. Each link carries its own match. Use “Forget this draw” to clear everything.
