What is a White Elephant generator?

A White Elephant generator replaces the hat of paper numbers at a White Elephant gift exchange. It draws a fair, random turn order for everyone taking part, and this one then keeps score for the rest of the game. On each turn you tap Open a gift or pick the gift being stolen, and it works out whose turn it is next, who has to choose again after losing a gift, how many times each gift has been stolen and when a gift is frozen. That settles the usual arguments (“was that its third steal?”) and lets the host enjoy the party. Everything runs in your browser and is saved on your device, so a refresh or a flat battery does not lose the game.

How to use the White Elephant generator

  1. Type or paste the names of everyone who brought a gift, one per line.
  2. Check the house rules: how many steals freeze a gift, whether a turn has a steal limit, whether people can steal straight back, and whether player 1 gets a final swap.
  3. Press Draw turn order and start. Read the order out, copy it to the group chat or print it.
  4. On each turn, tap Open a wrapped gift (type what it is if you like) or tap the gift the player steals. The tracker moves to whoever has to choose next.
  5. Made a mistake? Press Undo. When the last gift is opened, and player 1 has had their final swap, you get the list of who goes home with what.

White Elephant rules this generator follows

These are the most common White Elephant rules. Change any of them under House rules before you start and the tracker enforces your version: it greys out gifts that are frozen, cannot be stolen back, or are over the steal limit for the turn.

Frozen after N steals
Once a gift has been stolen this many times it stays with its holder for the rest of the game. Three is the classic number. Two makes a faster game; “never” makes a long, chaotic one.
Steals per turn
Limits how long one turn can run. With a limit of 2, the third person in a chain has to open a wrapped gift. Most groups play with no limit and let the freeze rule end the chains.
No stealing straight back
If your gift is taken, you cannot take the same gift back in that turn. Without this rule two people can trade one gift back and forth forever.
Final swap for player 1
Player 1 had nothing to steal on their turn, so they get the last move: swap with any unfrozen gift or keep their own. The person they swap with gets player 1’s gift and the game ends.

White Elephant vs Yankee Swap vs Dirty Santa vs Secret Santa

The first three are the same stealing game under regional names. Secret Santa is different: you draw one name and buy for that person.

Popular White Elephant variations

  • Keep gifts wrappedNobody opens anything until the end, so people steal by size, shape and wrapping paper. Open everything together once the last gift is picked.
  • Two-steal limitGifts freeze after their second steal. Good for big groups or short lunch breaks.
  • Theme exchangeEveryone brings a book, a mug, something homemade, a regift or a gift from one shop. Same rules, more focused gifts.
  • Dice White ElephantEveryone gets a gift at the start and rolls a die to swap, pass left or pass right. A different game, best for very large groups.
  • Secret Santa hybridPeople draw names and buy for one person, then steal after unwrapping. Use the Secret Santa or gift exchange generator for the draw.
  • Virtual White ElephantGifts are shipped or bought as gift cards, players open on camera and the host shares the tracker on screen.

Tips for hosting a White Elephant gift exchange

  • Players: 6 to 20 is ideal. Fewer than 5 leaves little to steal; more than 25 is long, so use a two-steal limit or split into groups with the random team generator.
  • Time: plan two to three minutes per player, so about 30 minutes for 12 people.
  • Budget: $20 to $30 is the most common limit for offices and friends. Put it in the spending limit box so it shows on screen and on the printed rules.
  • Gifts people steal: cosy blankets, gift cards, good snacks or drinks, board games, small kitchen gadgets and anything personalised to the group.
  • Run it on the big screen: open this page on a laptop connected to the TV, or share your screen on a video call, so everyone can see the steal counts.

Buying for one person instead? Draw names with the Secret Santa generator, or the gift exchange generator for birthdays, offices and other non-Christmas swaps. To pick a single winner, spin the wheel of names.

Example: a 12-person office White Elephant

Paste the 12 names, keep the standard rules (frozen after 3 steals, no stealing straight back, final swap for player 1) and press Draw turn order and start. Jordan draws number 1 and opens a candle. Sam, number 2, steals the candle, so Jordan has to choose again and opens a mug. Later the candle is stolen a third time, the tracker marks it frozen and nobody can take it. After player 12 has gone, Jordan gets the last move and swaps the mug for the unfrozen board game. The final list shows all 12 people and their gifts, ready to copy into the team chat.

What to expect from the result

The tracker runs on one device, usually the host’s phone or a laptop on the TV, rather than on everyone’s phone. It does not buy, wrap or ship gifts, and it does not run a video call, so for a remote party share your screen while you play. Gifts are named by what you type when they are opened. The game is saved in this browser only; use Copy results before you clear it if you want a record.

White Elephant Generator questions

How does the White Elephant generator pick the order?

It shuffles the names with your browser’s cryptographic random number generator, so every order is equally likely. You can redraw before the game starts, or keep the order as typed if you have already drawn numbers from a hat.

Does it keep track of steals?

Yes. Every gift shows how many times it has been stolen and who holds it now. When a gift reaches the freeze limit it is marked frozen and can no longer be taken. The tracker also blocks stealing straight back and enforces a steal limit per turn if you set one.

What if we make a mistake during the game?

Press Undo. You can undo every move back to the first gift, and you can rename a gift at any time if someone typed it wrong.

Do guests need the app or an account?

No. Only the host needs the page open, on a phone or a laptop. Nobody signs up, and names never leave your device. The game is saved in this browser so you can pick it up again after a refresh.

Can I use it for a virtual White Elephant?

Yes. Share your screen on Zoom, Teams or Google Meet and run the tracker as people take turns. Everyone sees the gifts, the steal counts and whose turn it is. Players open their own gifts on camera.
