What is Dirty Santa?

Dirty Santa is the Southern name for the White Elephant gift exchange. Everyone brings one wrapped gift and draws a number. On your turn you open a wrapped gift or steal one that is already open, and anyone who loses a gift picks again. A gift is “dead” after it has been stolen three times, and it stays with whoever holds it. The name comes from the stealing, not the gifts, so it works just as well for an office party or a church group as for a group of friends. This page explains the rules and tracks the game so the host does not have to count steals.

Dirty Santa rules, step by step

  1. Agree on a price limit and have each person bring one wrapped gift without a tag.
  2. Draw numbers to set the order. Press Draw turn order and start, or type the names in the order you drew them.
  3. Number 1 opens a gift.
  4. Each next player opens a new gift or steals an opened one. If your gift is stolen, you open a new gift or steal a different one, but not the gift that was just taken from you.
  5. A gift is dead after its third steal. It can no longer be stolen and stays with its holder.
  6. The game ends when the last wrapped gift is opened. If your group gives number 1 a last steal, turn on Final swap in the house rules.

Dirty Santa house rules this tracker supports

In Dirty Santa a gift that has been stolen three times is “dead” and stays put. Many groups play without a final swap, which is how the tracker starts here. Switch it on if player 1 gets a last steal at your party.

Dead after N steals
Once a gift has been stolen this many times it stays with its holder for the rest of the game. Three is the classic number. Two makes a faster game; “never” makes a long, chaotic one.
Steals per turn
Limits how long one turn can run. With a limit of 2, the third person in a chain has to open a wrapped gift. Most groups play with no limit and let the freeze rule end the chains.
No stealing straight back
If your gift is taken, you cannot take the same gift back in that turn. Without this rule two people can trade one gift back and forth forever.
Final swap for player 1
Player 1 had nothing to steal on their turn, so they get the last move: swap with any unfrozen gift or keep their own. The person they swap with gets player 1’s gift and the game ends.

White Elephant vs Yankee Swap vs Dirty Santa vs Secret Santa

The first three are the same stealing game under regional names. Secret Santa is different: you draw one name and buy for that person.

Popular Dirty Santa variations

  • Keep gifts wrappedNobody opens anything until the end, so people steal by size, shape and wrapping paper. Open everything together once the last gift is picked.
  • Two-steal limitGifts freeze after their second steal. Good for big groups or short lunch breaks.
  • Theme exchangeEveryone brings a book, a mug, something homemade, a regift or a gift from one shop. Same rules, more focused gifts.
  • Dice White ElephantEveryone gets a gift at the start and rolls a die to swap, pass left or pass right. A different game, best for very large groups.
  • Secret Santa hybridPeople draw names and buy for one person, then steal after unwrapping. Use the Secret Santa or gift exchange generator for the draw.
  • Virtual White ElephantGifts are shipped or bought as gift cards, players open on camera and the host shares the tracker on screen.

Tips for hosting a Dirty Santa gift exchange

  • Players: 6 to 20 is ideal. Fewer than 5 leaves little to steal; more than 25 is long, so use a two-steal limit or split into groups with the random team generator.
  • Time: plan two to three minutes per player, so about 30 minutes for 12 people.
  • Budget: $20 to $30 is the most common limit for offices and friends. Put it in the spending limit box so it shows on screen and on the printed rules.
  • Gifts people steal: cosy blankets, gift cards, good snacks or drinks, board games, small kitchen gadgets and anything personalised to the group.
  • Run it on the big screen: open this page on a laptop connected to the TV, or share your screen on a video call, so everyone can see the steal counts.

Buying for one person instead? Draw names with the Secret Santa generator, or the gift exchange generator for birthdays, offices and other non-Christmas swaps. To pick a single winner, spin the wheel of names.

Example: Dirty Santa at a church supper with 15 people

The host types 15 names, keeps “dead after 3 steals” and presses Draw turn order and start, then reads the numbers out. A heated blanket turns out to be the hit of the night: it is stolen three times in the first ten turns and the tracker marks it dead with Mrs Lee. When someone asks whether the gift card has been stolen twice or three times, the host checks the screen: twice, so it can still be taken. The last player opens the final gift and the results list shows who takes home what.

What to expect from the result

Dirty Santa has many house variations, so agree on yours first. The tracker handles the dead-gift limit, steals per turn, no stealing straight back and an optional final steal for number 1. It runs on one device, the host’s, and is saved in that browser only.

Dirty Santa Rules questions

What are the rules for Dirty Santa?

Everyone brings one wrapped gift and draws a number. Number 1 opens a gift. Each next player opens a new gift or steals an opened one. Anyone who loses a gift opens another or steals a different one. A gift is dead after three steals and stays with its holder. The game ends when the last gift is opened.

How many times can you steal a gift in Dirty Santa?

Three is the usual limit. On the third steal the gift is dead and nobody can take it. Some groups use two steals. Set the number under House rules and the tracker enforces it.

What is the difference between Dirty Santa and White Elephant?

They are the same game under different names. Dirty Santa is used mostly in the South and often has no final swap, while White Elephant groups usually let player 1 swap at the end. Yankee Swap is the New England name.

Can you steal back a gift in Dirty Santa?

Not straight away. If your gift is stolen you cannot take it right back on the same turn. You can try for it again on a later turn, as long as it is not dead.

What makes a good Dirty Santa gift?

Something many people would want, within the price limit: a cosy blanket, a gift card, a good bottle, a board game or a quality kitchen gadget. Gag gifts are fun too, but the best games have a few gifts everyone fights over.
