What is White Elephant? The quick answer
White Elephant is a party gift exchange where everyone brings one wrapped gift and nobody knows who will end up with it. Players draw numbers. Player 1 opens a gift. Every player after that either opens a new wrapped gift or steals one that has already been opened. Anyone whose gift is stolen opens a new gift or steals a different one. Most groups freeze a gift after three steals so the game ends, and many let player 1 make one final swap at the end because they never had a chance to steal. The game is also called Yankee Swap in New England and Dirty Santa in the South, with only small differences.
White Elephant rules, step by step
- Agree on a spending limit, often $20 to $30, and ask everyone to bring one wrapped gift with no name on it. Funny, useful and weird gifts all work.
- Put the gifts in one pile and draw numbers to set the turn order. Number 1 goes first.
- Player 1 opens any wrapped gift and shows it to everyone.
- Each next player chooses: open a new wrapped gift, or steal an opened gift from someone else.
- If your gift is stolen, you choose straight away: steal a different opened gift or open a new one. You cannot steal back the gift that was just taken from you.
- A gift is frozen after its third steal and stays with whoever holds it. The turn passes to the next number when someone opens a new gift.
- When the last wrapped gift is opened, player 1 may swap their gift for any gift that is not frozen, or keep it. Then the game is over and everyone keeps what they hold.
The White Elephant house rules, explained
Most arguments at a White Elephant party come from rules nobody agreed on. Decide these four before the first gift is opened. The tracker above uses whatever you choose and the printed sheet lists them.
- Frozen after N steals
- Once a gift has been stolen this many times it stays with its holder for the rest of the game. Three is the classic number. Two makes a faster game; “never” makes a long, chaotic one.
- Steals per turn
- Limits how long one turn can run. With a limit of 2, the third person in a chain has to open a wrapped gift. Most groups play with no limit and let the freeze rule end the chains.
- No stealing straight back
- If your gift is taken, you cannot take the same gift back in that turn. Without this rule two people can trade one gift back and forth forever.
- Final swap for player 1
- Player 1 had nothing to steal on their turn, so they get the last move: swap with any unfrozen gift or keep their own. The person they swap with gets player 1’s gift and the game ends.
White Elephant vs Yankee Swap vs Dirty Santa vs Secret Santa
The first three are the same stealing game under regional names. Secret Santa is different: you draw one name and buy for that person.
| Feature | White Elephant | Yankee Swap | Dirty Santa | Secret Santa |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Also called | Yankee Swap, Dirty Santa | White Elephant (New England name) | White Elephant (Southern name) | Kris Kringle, Pollyanna |
| What you buy | One gift for the pile, often funny or odd | One gift for the pile, usually nicer | One gift for the pile | One gift for the person you drew |
| Stealing | Yes | Yes, called swapping | Yes | No |
| Usual limit | Frozen after 3 steals | Frozen after 3 swaps | “Dead” after 3 steals | None |

Popular White Elephant variations
- Keep gifts wrappedNobody opens anything until the end, so people steal by size, shape and wrapping paper. Open everything together once the last gift is picked.
- Two-steal limitGifts freeze after their second steal. Good for big groups or short lunch breaks.
- Theme exchangeEveryone brings a book, a mug, something homemade, a regift or a gift from one shop. Same rules, more focused gifts.
- Dice White ElephantEveryone gets a gift at the start and rolls a die to swap, pass left or pass right. A different game, best for very large groups.
- Secret Santa hybridPeople draw names and buy for one person, then steal after unwrapping. Use the Secret Santa or gift exchange generator for the draw.
- Virtual White ElephantGifts are shipped or bought as gift cards, players open on camera and the host shares the tracker on screen.
Tips for hosting a White Elephant gift exchange
- Players: 6 to 20 is ideal. Fewer than 5 leaves little to steal; more than 25 is long, so use a two-steal limit or split into groups with the random team generator.
- Time: plan two to three minutes per player, so about 30 minutes for 12 people.
- Budget: $20 to $30 is the most common limit for offices and friends. Put it in the spending limit box so it shows on screen and on the printed rules.
- Gifts people steal: cosy blankets, gift cards, good snacks or drinks, board games, small kitchen gadgets and anything personalised to the group.
- Run it on the big screen: open this page on a laptop connected to the TV, or share your screen on a video call, so everyone can see the steal counts.

Example: one round of White Elephant with five players
Alex (1) opens a coffee grinder. Sam (2) steals the grinder, so Alex opens a puzzle. Jordan (3) steals the grinder from Sam (its second steal); Sam cannot steal it straight back, so Sam opens a scarf. Taylor (4) steals the grinder a third time and it is now frozen with Taylor. Jordan, left without a gift, opens a board game. Morgan (5) opens the last gift, a novelty mug. Alex then uses the final swap and takes the board game, leaving Jordan with the puzzle.
What to expect from the result
There is no single official rule book: these are the most common rules, and every office and family has its own twist. Agree on the steal limit and the final swap before you start. The tracker enforces the four rules it supports; anything else, such as keeping gifts wrapped until the end or a time limit per turn, is up to the host.
White Elephant Rules questions
What are the basic rules of White Elephant?
Everyone brings one wrapped gift and draws a number. Player 1 opens a gift. Each player after that opens a new gift or steals an opened one. If your gift is stolen, you open another or steal a different one. Gifts freeze after three steals, and player 1 often gets a final swap at the end.
How many times can a gift be stolen in White Elephant?
Three times is the most common limit. After its third steal the gift is frozen, or “dead”, and stays with the person holding it. Smaller groups sometimes use two steals so the game moves faster.
Can you steal a gift back in White Elephant?
Not straight away. The usual rule is that you cannot take back the gift that was just stolen from you on the same turn. You can steal it again on a later turn if it is not frozen.
Does the first person get to swap at the end?
In most versions, yes. Player 1 had no gifts to steal on their turn, so after the last gift is opened they may swap theirs for any unfrozen gift. Some groups skip this; switch off Final swap under House rules if yours does.
How long does a White Elephant game take?
Allow about two to three minutes per player. A 10-person game usually takes 20 to 30 minutes. A steal limit per turn or a freeze after two steals makes it quicker.
