What is a gift exchange generator?

A gift exchange generator draws names so that every person in a group buys one present for one other person, and receives one in return. It does the job of pulling names out of a hat, but it never lets anyone draw themselves, it can keep partners or housemates apart, and it works for people who are not in the same room. It suits any season and any occasion, from a team party at the end of a project to a family birthday tradition. This one runs entirely in your browser: each person gets a link that shows only their own match, and the names are never saved on a server.

How to draw names for a gift exchange

  1. Type or paste the names of everyone taking part, one per line. Add a surname initial if two people share a first name.
  2. Add rules for people who should not draw each other, such as partners or people who live together. Leave “No two people buy for each other” on so pairs do not simply swap.
  3. Optionally add the event name, spending limit, exchange date and a short note. Everyone sees them with their match.
  4. Press Draw names, then send each person their private link in your group chat or by email, pass one phone around the table, or print fold-over name slips.

Why use this gift exchange generator

  • Works for any occasionThe wording is neutral, so it fits a summer office party, a birthday circle or a holiday swap equally well.
  • Nobody hands over an emailShare links in the chat app your group already uses. There is nothing to sign up for and no invitations to accept.
  • Fair, rule-aware drawNobody draws themselves, partners can be kept apart and two people never just buy for each other unless you allow it.
  • Private by designThe draw happens on your device and each link reveals one match only. There is no database of your group to leak.

Gift exchange ideas: who uses it

  • Office and team gift exchanges. Set a budget everyone can see, post links in Slack or Teams, and keep the draw fair for remote and hybrid teams.
  • Family gift exchanges. Big families often buy for one person each instead of everyone. Keep couples apart and print slips for grandparents.
  • Birthday gift circles. Friends who take turns buying for one birthday each can draw the order and matches once at the start of the year.
  • Book clubs and hobby groups. Swap a favourite paperback, a plant cutting or a handmade item. Add the theme to the message so everyone knows.
  • Classrooms and teachers. Print fold-over slips with each pupil’s match and the spending limit, so no phones are needed.
  • Long-distance friends. Everyone gets a link wherever they live and posts the gift to their match. Add the posting deadline as the date.

How the name draw and private links work

  • Exclusions work both ways: if Alex and Sam are excluded, neither draws the other.
  • “No two people buy for each other” stops A→B and B→A pairs, so the exchange feels less like a straight swap.
  • “One big gift circle” links everyone into a single chain. It works well when gifts are opened one after another and each giver is revealed in turn.
  • The draw uses your browser’s cryptographic random generator and picks fairly among all valid arrangements. Only very tightly restricted groups fall back to a randomised search to find a valid draw.
  • Each personal link carries its match in the part of the address after “#”, which browsers do not send to web servers, and we clear it from the address bar before our analytics loads. The organiser’s device keeps the draw in local storage so a lost link can be copied again.

Want a party game instead of a name draw? The White Elephant generator draws the turn order and tracks every steal, with the White Elephant rules explained. For a festive version of this draw, use the Secret Santa generator.

Need something other than a gift exchange? Split people into random teams, pick a winner with the wheel of names, or draw numbers with the random number generator.

Example: a team gift exchange with a $20 limit

Paste ten names from your team list, add one rule to keep the two people who share a desk apart, type “Team gift exchange”, a $20 budget and the date of the party, then press Draw names. Copy each person’s message into a direct message on Slack or Teams. Everyone sees only their own match, the budget and the date. On the day, people bring their wrapped gift labelled with the receiver’s name.

What to expect from the result

Each link shows only one match, but links are not password-protected: anyone who is sent a link can open it, so send each one to its owner only. The organiser can see every match if they choose to. There are no wish lists, reminders or anonymous messaging, because nothing is stored online. Up to 200 people can take part. If you want a game where people open and steal gifts instead of buying for one person, use the White Elephant generator.

Gift Exchange Generator questions

How does a gift exchange name draw work?

Each person is matched with one other person to buy a gift for, and everyone receives exactly one gift. Enter the names, add any exclusions and press Draw names. The generator makes sure nobody gets themselves and every rule is kept, then you send each person a private link.

Is this only for Christmas?

No. The wording and the reveal screen are neutral, so it works for birthdays, office parties, end-of-year team events, book clubs or any holiday you celebrate. If you want the festive version, use the Secret Santa generator; the draw is the same.

Do people need an email address or an account?

No. Nobody signs up. You share each private link however you like: WhatsApp, text, Slack, Teams or email. You can also pass one phone around or print name slips.

Can I stop partners from drawing each other?

Yes. Add a rule for each pair who should not be matched. Rules work in both directions, and the generator tells you straight away if the rules make a draw impossible.

What is a good budget for a gift exchange?

Most office and friend groups pick $15 to $30, and family exchanges often go a little higher because each person buys only one gift. Pick a round number everyone can afford and put it in the Budget box so it appears on every reveal.
