What is a round robin tournament?
In a round robin tournament every team plays every other team, and the winner is the team with the best record rather than the last one standing. It is fair because nobody is knocked out early by a bad draw, which is why leagues, pool play and group stages use it. With n teams there are n × (n - 1) / 2 games. This generator uses the circle method to build the schedule: with an even number of teams everyone plays in every round, and with an odd number one team sits out each round, so nobody plays twice in a round and every team sits out exactly once.
How to make a round robin schedule
- Enter the teams or players, one per line. Up to 32 are supported.
- Keep Round robin selected. Choose whether teams play each other once or twice (home and away), and how many points a win and a draw are worth.
- After each game, click the winner or Draw, or tick Enter scores and type the score. The standings update straight away.
- Download the schedule and standings as a PDF or PNG, or copy a share link for the group.
Why use this round robin generator

What people use round robins for
- Pickleball and tennis. Small groups where everyone wants to play everyone, often in an afternoon.
- Leagues and seasons. A double round robin gives every team a home and away game against every other team.
- Pool play before playoffs. Run a round robin in each pool, then seed the knockout bracket from the standings.
- Office tournaments. Ping pong, FIFA, cornhole or chess at lunch. Share one link in Slack or Teams and print a copy for the break room.
- Chess, board games and esports. Swap scores for wins and draws and use 1 point for a win and half a point for a draw.
- Classrooms and clubs. Debate, spelling bees, chess clubs and sports days. Project the bracket on the board and click winners live.
Single elimination vs double elimination vs round robin
| Format | How it works | Games for n teams | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single elimination | Lose once and you are out. Winners move on until one is left. | n - 1 (7 for 8 teams) | Short events, big fields, one-day tournaments |
| Double elimination | A first loss drops you to the losers bracket; a second loss knocks you out. Grand final between the two bracket winners. | 2n - 2 or 2n - 1 (14 or 15 for 8 teams) | Esports, softball, pool and darts, events where one bad game should not end your day |
| Round robin | Everyone plays everyone. The best record wins, with no knockouts. | n × (n - 1) / 2 (28 for 8 teams) | Leagues, pool play, small groups with time to play every pairing |
How many games, rounds and byes: quick reference

How seeding, byes and results work
- Seeding: the first name in the list is seed 1, the second is seed 2 and so on. Seeds are placed so that 1 and 2 can only meet in the final, 1 to 4 only in the semifinals, and so on. Press Shuffle for a random draw.
- Byes: when the number of teams is not 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 or 128, the bracket grows to the next of those sizes. The empty places are byes and go to the top seeds, who start in round two. Bye games are hidden, so you only see games that are really played.
- Game numbers: every real game has a number, and empty places say where their team comes from, such as "Winner of 3" or "Loser of 5". This makes printed brackets easy to follow.
- Changing results: click a winner again to take the pick back, or pick the other team. Later games that depended on that result are cleared, and Undo brings them back.
- Double elimination: losers drop into the losers bracket in an order that avoids an immediate rematch. With the reset on, the grand final is played a second time only if the losers bracket team wins the first one.
- Round robin standings: 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw by default. Teams level on points are split by their head-to-head result (when exactly two are tied), then score difference, then scores for, then wins.

Example: a 5-team pickleball round robin
Five teams play 10 games in 5 rounds. Each round has two games and one team sits out, so every team plays four games and rests once. Enter scores as you go and the standings table shows points, wins and score difference. Turn on "Play each team twice" for a 10-round league with 20 games.
What to expect from the result
Round robin supports 2 to 32 teams. The schedule is listed by round with no dates, times or courts, so add those when you print it. With many teams the schedule grows fast: 16 teams need 120 games. A share link is a snapshot of the schedule and results when you copied it. The PDF uses standard fonts, so names in scripts such as Chinese, Arabic or Cyrillic may not print correctly; the PNG shows them fine.
Round Robin Generator questions
How many games are in a round robin?
n × (n - 1) / 2 for n teams, because each pair plays once. 4 teams play 6 games, 6 teams play 15, 8 teams play 28 and 10 teams play 45. A double round robin doubles that.
How many rounds does a round robin take?
n - 1 rounds with an even number of teams and n rounds with an odd number, because one team sits out each round. Every team plays once per round it is not sitting out.
What happens with an odd number of teams?
A bye is added, so in each round one team sits out. Over the whole schedule every team sits out exactly once.
How are ties in the standings broken?
Teams are ranked by points. If exactly two teams are level, the winner of their game goes first. After that, score difference, then total scores for, then wins.
Can teams play each other twice?
Yes. Choose "Play each team twice" for a double round robin. The second half repeats the schedule with home and away swapped.
