What is an EML file?
An .eml file is a single email saved in the standard Internet Message Format (RFC 5322 with MIME): the headers, the plain-text and HTML versions of the body, inline images and attachments, all in one text file. Mail apps such as Thunderbird, Apple Mail and Outlook export emails this way, Gmail offers “Download message”, and legal and compliance teams receive emails as .eml. This viewer decodes the MIME structure in your browser and shows the message as your email app would, with attachments you can save and the full headers for checking authenticity.
How to open an EML file
- Choose Open File and pick the .eml file, or drag it onto the page.
- Read the message; switch to plain text, or load remote images if you trust the sender.
- Download attachments individually or all together as a ZIP.
- Check the Headers tab for the delivery path and SPF, DKIM and DMARC, or save the email as PDF.
Before you trust an email
- Check the Headers tab: SPF, DKIM and DMARC should pass for the sender’s domain.
- A Reply-To on a different domain from the sender is a classic phishing sign.
- Keep remote images blocked for unknown senders: they reveal that and when you opened the email.
- Scan unexpected attachments before opening them, especially documents with macros.
Why use this EML viewer
- Everything in the messageSender, recipients, CC, date, HTML or plain-text body, inline images and every attachment, plus full headers with SPF, DKIM and DMARC results.
- Tracking pixels blockedRemote images, fonts and styles are blocked until you choose to load them, so opening an email here does not tell the sender you read it.
- Safe to openScripts, forms and event handlers are stripped and the message is shown in a locked-down frame. Attachments are listed but never opened automatically.
- Private by designThe email is opened in your browser and never uploaded, which matters for invoices, contracts, HR and legal correspondence.
Common uses
- No mail app. Read an .eml on a computer without Outlook or Thunderbird.
- Evidence and records. Review emails supplied for legal, HR or audit work.
- Suspicious emails. Inspect a phishing report safely, with scripts stripped and tracking blocked.
- Recover attachments. Pull files out of saved emails.

Example: a report email
The sample is an email with an inline logo, a tracking pixel (blocked), a CSV attachment and headers showing SPF, DKIM and DMARC all passing over two delivery hops.
What to expect from the result
Encrypted S/MIME and PGP messages are shown in encrypted form. Winmail.dat (TNEF) attachments are listed but not expanded.
EML Viewer questions
How do I open an EML file without Outlook?
Open it here: choose Open File and pick the .eml. The message, attachments and headers appear in your browser.
Which email files can I open?
.eml files (from Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Gmail downloads and most mail servers) and Outlook .msg files. Both work on every page of this tool.
Can I convert EML to PDF?
Yes. Click Download PDF for an instant PDF with the header block, or Print / Save as PDF for a text-searchable version.
Why are some images missing?
Remote images are blocked by default because they can track you. Click “Show remote content” to load them.
Is my email uploaded?
No. The file is parsed in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. Remote images inside the email are also blocked unless you allow them.
