Why convert GIF to MP4?
GIF is an old image format: it stores every frame with a 256-colour palette and weak compression, so animations quickly reach megabytes. MP4 with H.264 video stores the same animation at a fraction of the size and plays smoothly everywhere. Many social networks accept only video uploads, or convert GIFs badly. This converter re-encodes your GIF to an MP4 in your browser, keeping its frame timing and size (rounded to even pixels, as H.264 requires).
How to use GIF to MP4 Converter
- Choose Open File or drop your GIFs.
- Optionally limit the resolution.
- Select Convert to MP4. The first conversion downloads the 32 MB compatibility engine, which is then cached.
- Download the MP4 or a ZIP.
Why convert MKV to MP4 here
- No upload, no size capGIFs are read straight from your disk and converted on your device. Nothing is queued on a server or counted against a quota.
- Up to 90% smallerH.264 compresses animation far better than GIF, so files shrink dramatically.
- Upload anywhereInstagram, TikTok, X, WhatsApp and PowerPoint all accept MP4.
- Batch convert with ZIPAdd several files, convert them in one go with the same settings and download a single ZIP.
When you need MKV as MP4
- Social media. Post GIFs to platforms that only take video.
- Websites. Replace heavy GIFs with autoplaying MP4 for faster pages.
- Presentations. Smooth, small animations in slides.
- Messaging. Send animations as compact videos.
GIF to MP4 tips
- MP4 has no transparency; transparent GIF areas become black.
- For websites, use <video autoplay loop muted playsinline> to make the MP4 behave like a GIF.
- Very small GIFs (under 100 KB) may not shrink much.
- To go the other way, use the video to GIF converter.
Local conversion vs upload-based converters
| Feature | Digital ToolPad | Typical upload converter |
|---|---|---|
| Where the file is converted | On your device, in the browser | On the service’s servers after upload |
| File size | No cap set by us; limited by your device | Free plans are often capped (commonly around 1 GB or less) |
| Daily limits | None | Some services ration free conversions or use credits |
| Account or watermark | Never | Varies; some require sign-up for large files |
| MOV to MP4 without re-encoding | Automatic for H.264 videos | Varies |
| Works offline after loading | Yes, for the fast engine | No |
Upload services are useful when a device is too slow or a format is very unusual. For everyday conversions, keeping the file local is faster to start and keeps private recordings private. Example: a reaction GIF
A 4.8 MB, 3-second 480 × 270 GIF converts to an MP4 of about 250 KB with the same frames and smoother colour.
What to expect from the result
GIF to MP4 uses the FFmpeg engine, so very long or large GIFs take a while. Transparency is not supported in MP4. The GIF’s loop setting does not apply to video; set looping in the player.
GIF to MP4 Converter questions
How do I convert a GIF to MP4?
Open the GIF, select Convert to MP4 and download the video. It keeps every frame and the original timing.
Is this GIF to MP4 converter free and private?
Yes. It is free, with no account, watermark, daily credit or conversion count. Your file is opened by your browser and converted on your device; it is not sent to a conversion server. Closing the tab discards the working copy. Downloaded results stay on your device.
Why is the MP4 so much smaller than the GIF?
GIF compresses each frame separately with a limited palette. H.264 shares information between frames, which is far more efficient.
Can I post the MP4 on Instagram?
Yes. Instagram, TikTok, X and WhatsApp accept MP4. For Instagram, very short clips may need to be at least 3 seconds.
Does the MP4 loop like a GIF?
Loop behaviour depends on the player. Social apps usually loop short videos automatically; on websites add the loop attribute.
