What is hex to ASCII conversion?
Hex to ASCII conversion turns hexadecimal byte values into the characters they represent. Each pair of hex digits is one byte from 00 to FF: 48 is 72 in decimal, which is “H” in ASCII. This converter decodes the bytes as UTF-8, which matches ASCII for English text and also handles accented letters and emoji. It accepts hex in most common formats and flags anything that is not valid.
How to convert hex to ASCII
- Paste the hex into the Hex box. It can include spaces, colons, commas, 0x, \x or % prefixes.
- Read the decoded text on the right as you type.
- If characters show as , the bytes are not valid UTF-8 text; check for a missing digit.
- Copy the text or open the character breakdown.
How text becomes binary and hex
- Every character is first encoded as UTF-8 bytes. Plain English letters, digits and punctuation use one byte each (the same values as ASCII).
- Accented letters use 2 bytes, most other scripts 2–3, and emoji 4. That is why “é” is 11000011 10101001 in binary.
- Binary shows each byte as 8 bits (0s and 1s). Hex shows each byte as 2 digits from 00 to FF.
- The character breakdown under the converter lists the code point, decimal, hex and binary for each character.
Why use this hex to ascii converter
- Works in both directionsType in either box. The translator decodes as easily as it encodes.
- Accepts any hex formatReads 48 65 6C, 48656C, 0x48 0x65, \x48\x65 and %48%65 without cleanup.
- UTF-8, not just ASCIIMulti-byte characters and emoji decode correctly, with a warning for invalid bytes.
- Private by designEverything is calculated in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or saved.
Common uses
- Debugging and logs. Read hex dumps, packet payloads and escaped strings.
- CTF and puzzles. Decode hex-encoded flags and messages.
- Web development. Inspect percent-encoded and \x-escaped strings.
- Embedded and serial data. Turn bytes from a device into readable text.

Example: decode a hex string
48 65 6C 6C 6F 20 57 6F 72 6C 64 → Hello World 0x48 0x69 → Hi \xF0\x9F\x91\x8B → 👋
What to expect from the result
Hex is decoded as UTF-8 text. Hex that encodes numbers, images or binary files will show unreadable characters. An odd number of digits in one unseparated block cannot be split into bytes reliably.
Hex to ASCII Converter questions
How do I convert hex to text?
Paste the hex into the Hex box. Each pair of digits is read as one byte and the bytes are decoded as text in the Text box.
Is hex to ASCII the same as hex to text?
For English, yes. ASCII covers bytes 00–7F; this converter decodes UTF-8, which is identical for those bytes and also supports every other language and emoji.
What does 48 65 6C 6C 6F mean?
It is “Hello”: 48 = H, 65 = e, 6C = l, 6C = l, 6F = o.
Can I paste hex with 0x or \x prefixes?
Yes. 0x48 0x65, \x48\x65, %48%65 and 48:65 are all read correctly, as is hex with no separators.
Why do I see in the result?
The bytes are not valid UTF-8, often because of a missing digit, or because the data is not text (for example an image or compressed file).
