Binary Translator

Type text to see it in binary, or paste 0s and 1s to read them as text. Both boxes update as you type.

What is a binary translator?

A binary translator converts readable text into binary code, the 0s and 1s computers store, and back again. Each character is encoded as one or more bytes, and each byte is written as 8 binary digits (bits). This translator uses UTF-8, the encoding used by almost every website and app, so it handles emoji, accented letters and other scripts as well as plain English. It reads binary with or without spaces, commas or line breaks, and can also show the same bytes as hex, decimal or octal.

How to translate binary code

  1. Type or paste text in the Text box. The binary appears instantly, 8 bits per byte.
  2. To translate binary to English, paste the 0s and 1s into the Binary box.
  3. Choose a separator (space, none, comma or new line) or switch the encoding to hex, decimal or octal.
  4. Open the character breakdown to see each character’s bytes, then copy the result.

How text becomes binary and hex

  • Every character is first encoded as UTF-8 bytes. Plain English letters, digits and punctuation use one byte each (the same values as ASCII).
  • Accented letters use 2 bytes, most other scripts 2–3, and emoji 4. That is why “é” is 11000011 10101001 in binary.
  • Binary shows each byte as 8 bits (0s and 1s). Hex shows each byte as 2 digits from 00 to FF.
  • The character breakdown under the converter lists the code point, decimal, hex and binary for each character.

Why use this binary translator

  • Works in both directionsType in either box. The translator decodes as easily as it encodes.
  • Real UTF-8Emoji and accented letters translate correctly, unlike ASCII-only tools that produce question marks.
  • Forgiving inputPaste binary with spaces, commas, line breaks or no separators at all.
  • Private by designEverything is calculated in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or saved.

Common uses

  • Secret messages. Send a message in binary for a friend or puzzle to decode.
  • Computer science homework. Check how characters are stored as bytes.
  • Debugging. Inspect the exact bytes of a string, including invisible characters.
  • Gifts and crafts. Turn a name into binary for a bracelet, cross-stitch or T-shirt.

Example: “Hi” in binary

H = 72 = 01001000 i = 105 = 01101001 “Hi” → 01001000 01101001

What to expect from the result

Binary is decoded as UTF-8 text. Binary that represents numbers, images or other file data will show unreadable characters (). Groups that are not 8 bits long are read as whole numbers per group.

Binary Translator questions

How do I translate binary to English?

Paste the binary into the Binary box. Each group of 8 bits becomes one byte, and the bytes are decoded as UTF-8 text in the Text box.

How do I convert text to binary?

Type your text in the Text box. Every character is converted to its UTF-8 bytes and each byte is shown as 8 bits.

What is “hello” in binary?

01101000 01100101 01101100 01101100 01101111. Capital “Hello” starts with 01001000 instead.

Does the binary translator support emoji?

Yes. Emoji are 4 bytes in UTF-8, so one emoji becomes 32 bits. They decode back correctly.

Do I need spaces between the bytes?

No. Unseparated binary is split into groups of 8 bits automatically. Spaces, commas and line breaks also work.
