What is a hex to binary converter?

Hex to binary conversion is the simplest base conversion because 16 is 2⁴: each hexadecimal digit is exactly four binary digits. 0 is 0000, 9 is 1001, A is 1010 and F is 1111. Replace each digit with its four bits and you have the binary number. This converter does it instantly, groups the result by nibble, and shows the bits in a grid with their positions.

How to convert hex to binary

  1. Type a hex number in the Hexadecimal box. Prefixes, spaces and underscores are ignored.
  2. Read the binary result instantly. Binary, octal, decimal, hex and a custom base update together.
  3. Scroll to “How to convert hex to binary” for the step-by-step working with your number.
  4. For negative numbers, tick Signed and choose a bit width to see the two’s complement form. Then copy any result.

Number base cheat sheet

  • Binary (base 2) uses 0–1, octal (base 8) uses 0–7, decimal (base 10) uses 0–9 and hexadecimal (base 16) uses 0–9 then A–F for 10–15.
  • One hex digit is exactly 4 bits (a nibble), so hex and binary convert digit by digit: F = 1111, A = 1010.
  • Common prefixes: 0b for binary, 0o for octal and 0x for hex. They are optional here.
  • In two’s complement, the top bit is the sign: 1111 1111 is −1 as a signed 8-bit number but 255 unsigned.

Why use this hex to binary converter

  • Shows the workingStep-by-step place values or repeated division for the conversion you choose, ideal for homework and exams.
  • Any size, signed or unsignedArbitrary-precision integers, plus two’s complement for 8, 16, 32 and 64-bit values.
  • Private by designEverything is calculated in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or saved.

Common uses

  • Bit fields. See which flags 0x8C sets.
  • Assembly and embedded code. Decode register values.
  • Colour channels. Inspect the bits of each colour byte.
  • Networking. Expand IPv6 and MAC address segments.

Example: hex to binary

2F (hex) 2 → 0010 F → 1111 2F = 0010 1111 (binary) = 47 (decimal)

What to expect from the result

Whole numbers only: fractional values such as 0.1 are not converted. Very long numbers are converted exactly, but the step-by-step working is shown only for numbers up to 24 digits.

Hex to Binary Converter questions

How do you convert hex to binary?

Replace each hex digit with its 4-bit binary value: 0 = 0000 … 9 = 1001, A = 1010, B = 1011, C = 1100, D = 1101, E = 1110, F = 1111.

What is FF in binary?

1111 1111.

What is 0x1F in binary?

0001 1111, which is 31 in decimal.

Why does each hex digit equal 4 bits?

Because 16 = 2⁴. Four bits have exactly 16 combinations, one for each hex digit.

Can I see the bits without spaces?

Yes. Untick Group digits to get one continuous binary string.
