What is an AI file?
An .ai file is an Adobe Illustrator document: vector artwork such as logos, illustrations and print layouts. Since Illustrator CS, .ai files are saved with an embedded PDF so other apps can display them; that is what this viewer renders, using Mozilla’s PDF.js in your browser. You can page through every artboard, read its size in points, millimetres and inches, see which version of Illustrator created it, and export each artboard as PNG or JPG at 72, 150 or 300 DPI, or save the whole file as a PDF.
How to open an AI file
- Choose Open File and pick the .ai file.
- Use the arrows to move between artboards and zoom to inspect details.
- Check the Document panel for artboard size and the creating app.
- Export PNG or JPG at the resolution you need, or Save as PDF.
Good to know about AI files
- If a file shows “This is an Adobe Illustrator file that was saved without PDF Content”, it was saved with PDF compatibility switched off; re-save it from Illustrator.
- Fonts are embedded in the PDF content, so text displays even if you do not have the fonts.
- Export at 300 DPI for print and 72–150 DPI for screens.
- Layers in Illustrator are flattened in the PDF content and cannot be toggled.
Why use this AI File viewer
- Every artboardMulti-artboard files show each artboard as a page, with its own size.
- Print-ready numbersArtboard sizes in points, millimetres and inches for print checks.
- Sharp exportsVector artwork is rendered fresh at 72, 150 or 300 DPI, so exports stay crisp.
- Your designs stay privateFiles are opened in your browser and never uploaded, so client artwork and unreleased designs stay on your computer.

More design tools: the SVG viewer, PNG to ICO converter, image resizer and EXIF viewer.
Example: a two-artboard brand file
The sample has two 8.5 × 5.5 in (612 × 396 pt) artboards. Export artboard 1 as a 300 DPI PNG (2550 × 1650 px) or save both as a PDF.
What to expect from the result
Only PDF-compatible .ai files can be rendered. Illustrator layers, editable text and effects are not available separately. Very complex artwork may render slowly on phones.
AI File Viewer questions
How do I open an AI file without Illustrator?
Open it here: choose Open File and pick the .ai. Each artboard appears in your browser.
Which .ai files can be opened?
Files saved with “Create PDF Compatible File” ticked, the default since Illustrator CS. Old PostScript-based .ai files (Illustrator 8 and earlier) are detected and explained, but cannot be rendered in a browser.
Can I convert AI to PNG or JPG?
Yes. Choose PNG or JPG, pick 72, 150 or 300 DPI and click Download, or export all artboards as a ZIP.
Can I edit the AI file?
No. Use Illustrator, Affinity Designer or Inkscape to edit; this tool views and converts.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The file is read and rendered in your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server.
