What is an average?

The average most people mean is the arithmetic mean: add the numbers and divide by how many there are. The median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted, and is less affected by extreme values; the mode is the value that appears most often. A weighted average gives some values more importance, such as an exam worth 50% of a grade. This calculator shows all of them, plus the sum, count, range, sample standard deviation and geometric mean.

How to use Average Calculator

  1. Type or paste numbers separated by commas, spaces or new lines; a column copied from Excel works.
  2. Read the mean, then the median, mode, range and standard deviation below it.
  3. For grades or scores with different importance, use the weighted average card with matching values and weights.
  4. Open “Show working” for the steps and spreadsheet formula.

Average formulas

  • Mean = sum of values ÷ number of values.
  • Median = the middle value of the sorted list (the mean of the two middle values for even counts).
  • Mode = the most frequent value; a list can have several or none.
  • Weighted average = Σ(value × weight) ÷ Σ(weight).

Example: test scores

Scores 72, 85, 90, 85, 68 → sum 400, count 5 → mean 80, median 85, mode 85.

What to expect from the result

Lists use commas, spaces or new lines between numbers, so do not include thousands separators inside numbers (write 1250, not 1,250). Standard deviation is the sample standard deviation (n − 1).

Average Calculator questions

How do you calculate an average?

Add all the numbers and divide by how many there are. The average of 4, 8 and 12 is 24 ÷ 3 = 8.

What is the difference between mean and median?

The mean uses every value; the median is the middle value. With outliers, such as one very high salary, the median better represents a typical value.

How do I calculate a weighted average?

Multiply each value by its weight, add the results, then divide by the total of the weights. The weights do not need to add up to 100.

Can I paste numbers from Excel?

Yes. Copy a column or row and paste it; tabs and new lines are treated as separators.

What does it mean if there is no mode?

Every value appears only once, so no value is more frequent than the others.
