How is overtime calculated?
Under the US Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees earn at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states and contracts add daily overtime or double time (2×), for example California for hours over 12 in a day. This calculator multiplies your regular hours by your rate, your overtime hours by the overtime rate and any double-time hours by twice your rate, then adds them up.

Overtime Calculator questions
How do I calculate time-and-a-half?
Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5 to get the overtime rate, then multiply by your overtime hours. $20 an hour gives $30 for each overtime hour.
When does overtime start?
Federally, after 40 hours in a workweek. Some states, like California, also count hours over 8 in a single day.
What is double time?
Pay at twice the regular rate, required in some states and contracts for long days, holidays or seventh consecutive workdays.
Is overtime taxed more?
Overtime is taxed as normal income. A bigger paycheck can make withholding look higher, but the tax rate on your income is the same.
Do salaried employees get overtime?
Exempt salaried employees usually do not. Non-exempt salaried employees do; it depends on job duties and salary level.
