What is AVIF and why convert it to JPG?

AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. Websites use it because it is often 30–50% smaller than JPG at the same quality, so images you save from the web increasingly arrive as .avif files. Older software, many photo editors, Windows apps and upload forms still cannot open AVIF. This converter decodes AVIF with your browser’s built-in decoder and saves standard JPG files, with quality and resize options.

How to convert AVIF to JPG

  1. Choose Open File or drop your AVIF images.
  2. Set the JPG quality (90% is visually lossless for most photos) and an optional maximum size.
  3. Select Convert.
  4. Download each JPG or all of them as a ZIP.

AVIF tips

  • Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16+ decode AVIF, so the converter works in all current browsers.
  • JPG files will be larger than the AVIF originals; that is expected.
  • Use 85–92% quality for photos; higher values grow the file with little visible gain.
  • Choose PNG instead if the AVIF has transparency you want to keep.

Why use this avif to jpg converter

  • No upload, no size capImages are converted by your own browser. Nothing is sent to a server, so there is no queue, no file-size limit and nothing to delete afterwards.
  • Works with HDR and transparencyTransparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose; wide-gamut images are converted to standard sRGB JPG.
  • Batch convert with ZIPDrop a whole folder of images and download them together as one ZIP file.
  • Location data removedCamera details and GPS coordinates are not copied into the converted file.

Common uses

  • Images saved from websites. Open them in apps that do not support AVIF.
  • Upload forms. Job, visa and marketplace forms that accept JPG only.
  • Editing. Older versions of Photoshop and other editors.
  • Sharing. Send images to people on older phones and PCs.

Example: product photos saved from a store

Drop 12 AVIF product photos, keep quality at 90% and set the longest side to 2000 px. Download one ZIP with 12 JPGs ready for a presentation.

What to expect from the result

Animated AVIF is converted to its first frame. Very old browsers that cannot decode AVIF will show an error; use any current browser.

AVIF to JPG Converter questions

How do I open an AVIF file?

Current browsers open AVIF directly. To use it in apps that cannot, convert it to JPG or PNG here.

Does converting AVIF to JPG lose quality?

JPG is also lossy, but at 90% quality the difference is not visible for photos. The file will usually be larger than the AVIF.

Why are my JPGs bigger than the AVIF files?

AVIF compresses much more efficiently than JPG, so the same image needs more bytes as a JPG.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Conversion happens in your browser on your device. You can check in your browser’s developer tools: no image data leaves the page.

Can I convert many files at once?

Yes. Open or drop as many files as you like, select Convert, then download them one by one or all together as a ZIP.
