What is a JFIF file?

JFIF (JPEG File Interchange Format) is simply a JPEG image. Windows and some browsers save JPEG images from the web with a .jfif extension, which confuses apps, upload forms and online shops that only accept .jpg or .jpeg. This converter re-saves each image as a standard JPG with the .jpg extension, at the quality you choose, without uploading it anywhere.

How to convert JFIF to JPG

  1. Open or drop your .jfif files.
  2. Keep JPG selected and choose a quality (95% keeps practically all detail).
  3. Select Convert.
  4. Download the .jpg files or a ZIP.

JFIF questions answered

  • JFIF and JPG are the same image format; only the file extension differs.
  • Renaming .jfif to .jpg usually works too, but converting guarantees a clean, standard file.
  • Windows saves web images as .jfif because of a registry setting for the JPEG type.
  • Converting at 95% quality keeps visible quality essentially unchanged.

Why use this jfif to jpg converter

  • No upload, no size capImages are converted by your own browser. Nothing is sent to a server, so there is no queue, no file-size limit and nothing to delete afterwards.
  • Accepted everywhereThe result is a normal .jpg file that any upload form, app or printer accepts.
  • Batch convert with ZIPDrop a whole folder of images and download them together as one ZIP file.

Common uses

  • Images saved from Chrome or Edge. Fix files that saved as .jfif.
  • Upload forms. Forms that reject .jfif.
  • Printing services. Kiosks and print shops expect .jpg.
  • Photo editors. Apps that do not recognise .jfif.

Example: a form that rejects your photo

A passport photo saved as photo.jfif is rejected by an online form. Convert it at 95% quality to photo.jpg and upload that instead.

What to expect from the result

Each JPG is re-encoded, which can change the file size slightly. For lossless results, simply renaming the file extension is an alternative.

JFIF to JPG Converter questions

Is JFIF the same as JPG?

Yes. JFIF is a JPEG image with a different file extension. Converting gives you a standard .jpg file.

Why do my images save as JFIF?

Windows associates the JPEG type with the .jfif extension on some systems, so browsers suggest .jfif when saving. Converting or renaming fixes it.

Can I just rename .jfif to .jpg?

Usually, yes. Converting re-saves the image as a clean JPG, which also removes metadata and fixes unusual files.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Conversion happens in your browser on your device. You can check in your browser’s developer tools: no image data leaves the page.

Can I convert many files at once?

Yes. Open or drop as many files as you like, select Convert, then download them one by one or all together as a ZIP.
