What is an easy grader?

An easy grader, often called an EZ grader, is a grading chart for teachers. Traditionally it is a cardboard slide: set it to the number of questions and it shows the percentage for each number wrong. This online version does the same for any number of questions from 1 to 400, with half points, your own grading scale and a letter grade for every row. Type the number wrong for one paper to highlight it, or print the whole chart and grade a class set without touching a calculator.

How to use the easy grader

  1. Enter the number of questions, or the total points, on the test.
  2. Choose whole or half points for the chart, and check the grading scale under Grading scale.
  3. Read the chart: each row shows the number wrong, the number right, the percentage and the letter grade.
  4. Type the number wrong for a paper to highlight its row, or click Print chart to grade a whole class set from paper.

Why teachers use this easy grader

  • A full grading chartEnter the number of questions and see the percentage and letter for every possible number wrong, with half points if you need them. Print it and keep it next to the stack of tests.
  • Your school’s grading scaleChoose plus/minus with or without A+, or a simple 10-point scale, then edit any cutoff to match your syllabus. Every result updates at once.
  • Any test lengthCardboard grading slides usually stop at 100 questions. This one handles up to 400 questions or points, including odd totals like 37.
  • Answers as you typeNo Calculate button and no page reloads. Change any number and every result updates in the same moment.
  • Nothing to installWorks on a classroom computer, a phone or a tablet, with no app, account or student data stored anywhere but your browser.
  • Three calculators in oneCourse grade, final exam and test score are tabs on the same page and share one grading scale. Your course grade can be sent to the final exam tab in one click.

When an easy grader helps

  • Grading tests and quizzes. Teachers can turn a number wrong into a percentage and letter in a second, or print the chart for a whole stack of papers.
  • Quizzes and exit tickets. Short quizzes with 8 or 12 questions give awkward percentages. The chart has them all.
  • Rubrics and point totals. Enter total points instead of questions for labs, essays and rubrics scored out of 30, 45 or 60.
  • Substitute teachers. Print a chart for each test so a substitute can grade with the right scale.
  • Students checking a score. Students can check the grade on a returned test or see how many they can miss next time.
  • Weighted class grades. Use the Course grade tab to combine test scores with homework and quizzes into a class grade.

Grade formulas, with examples

These are the formulas the calculator uses. Weights are percentages, or decimals where the formula says so (25% = 0.25).

Weighted grade
(score₁ × weight₁ + score₂ × weight₂ + …) ÷ (weight₁ + weight₂ + …)
Example: (95 × 20 + 88 × 15 + 82 × 25 + 90 × 15) ÷ 75 = 88.27%
Points grade
total points earned ÷ total points possible × 100
Example: 405 ÷ 450 × 100 = 90%
Score needed on the final
(target - current × (1 - final weight)) ÷ final weight
Example: (90 - 88 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 96%
Grade after the final
current × (1 - final weight) + final score × final weight
Example: 88 × 0.75 + 80 × 0.25 = 86%
Test score
(questions - wrong) ÷ questions × 100
Example: (20 - 3) ÷ 20 × 100 = 85%

Letter grade scale: percentages for A to F

Most US high schools and colleges use the plus/minus scale below. Some stop at A (no A+), and many high schools use a simple 10-point scale (A 90, B 80, C 70, D 60). Your syllabus has the final word, and you can change every cutoff in the calculator.

Plus/minus letter grade scale

B+87 to 89.99D63 to 66.99
B83 to 86.99D-60 to 62.99

Turn your letter grades into a grade point average with the GPA calculator, check percentages with the percentage calculator, or average a list of scores with the average calculator. For studying, try the Pomodoro timer, write equations with the math editor and format sources with the citation generator. See every tool on the student tools page.

Example: grading a 25-question quiz

Enter 25 questions. Each question is worth 4%, so the chart reads 0 wrong = 100% (A+), 1 wrong = 96% (A), 2 wrong = 92% (A-), 3 wrong = 88% (B+), 5 wrong = 80% (B-) and 10 wrong = 60% (D-). With half points on, 2.5 wrong = 90% (A-).

What to expect from the result

Every question counts the same. For tests with different point values, enter total points and count points lost. This tool is not affiliated with the makers of any EZ Grader product; it is a free online grading chart that works the same way.

Easy Grader questions

How does an EZ grader work?

It divides the number right by the number of questions. For each number wrong, percentage = (questions - wrong) ÷ questions × 100. The online chart does this for every row and adds the letter grade from your grading scale.

Can I print the grading chart?

Yes. Click Print chart for a clean page with the test length, the grading scale and every row, without the rest of the website.

Can I change the grading scale?

Yes. Pick plus/minus with or without A+, or a 10-point scale, and edit any cutoff. The chart and letters update immediately and your scale is saved for next time.

Does it support half points?

Yes. Switch the chart to half points to see 0.5, 1, 1.5 wrong and so on. You can also type a decimal for one paper.

Is student data stored anywhere?

No names or student data are entered at all. The test length and scale are saved only in your browser.
