Your class
Your grade before the final, as a percentage or letter.
How much of the class grade the final is worth.
A letter means its lowest percentage: A- is 90.
Whatever happens on the final, your grade will land between 66% (D) with a 0 and 91% (A-) with a 100.

What is a final grade calculator?
A final grade calculator answers one question before an exam: what score do I need on the final to end up with the grade I want? It uses three numbers: your grade in the class right now, the weight of the final as a percentage of the course, and your target grade. Your current grade counts for the part of the course that is already done, and the final counts for the rest, so the needed score is (target - current × (1 - weight)) ÷ weight. This calculator also shows the lowest and highest grade you can still get, the score needed for every letter, and the class grade you would get for each likely final score, so you can see whether you are aiming for a pass, a B or an A.
How to find what you need on your final
- Open the Final exam tab and enter your current grade in the class, as a percentage or a letter.
- Enter how much the final is worth, in percent. Your syllabus usually lists it, for example 20% or 25%.
- Enter the grade you want in the class, such as 90 or A-.
- Read the score you need on the final. The tables below show the score needed for every letter and the class grade you would end up with for scores from 50 to 100.
Why use this final grade calculator
- What you need for every letterInstead of one answer for one target, you get a table with the score needed for an A, A-, B+ and every other grade, marked as already secured, reachable or not possible without extra credit.
- Best and worst caseSee the grade you keep even with a 0 on the final, and the highest grade you can still reach with a perfect score. Both are shown before you even set a target.
- Start from your categoriesDo not know your current grade? Fill in your categories in the Course grade tab and send the result here with its remaining weight in one click.
- Type scores the way you have themEnter 88, 88%, 44/50, 18 out of 20 or a letter like B+. Extra credit above 100% is allowed. You never have to convert anything first.
- Your school’s grading scaleChoose plus/minus with or without A+, or a simple 10-point scale, then edit any cutoff to match your syllabus. Every result updates at once.
- Saved on your device, privateYour classes and scores are kept in this browser, so they are still there next time. Nothing is sent to a server and there is no account to create.
When to use a final exam calculator
- Planning for finals week. See which classes need a big score on the final and which are already safe, so you can spend your study time where it matters.
- Deciding how hard to study. If even a 60 keeps your B, you can focus on a class where the final decides the letter. If an A needs 104%, you know to aim for the A- instead.
- Checking if you can still pass. Set the target to 60 or 70, or to your school’s passing grade, to see the minimum score you need.
- Final worth more than one test. If the final is worth 30%, 40% or even 50% of the grade, the what-if table shows how much one exam can move your grade.
- Parents following progress. Enter the scores from the parent portal and see what your child needs on the rest of the term, explained in plain numbers.
- What-if scenarios. Try a 70, an 85 and a 95 on the next test and watch the course grade change before you decide whether to retake a quiz or drop a class.
Grade formulas, with examples
These are the formulas the calculator uses. Weights are percentages, or decimals where the formula says so (25% = 0.25).
- Weighted grade
- (score₁ × weight₁ + score₂ × weight₂ + …) ÷ (weight₁ + weight₂ + …)
- Example: (95 × 20 + 88 × 15 + 82 × 25 + 90 × 15) ÷ 75 = 88.27%
- Points grade
- total points earned ÷ total points possible × 100
- Example: 405 ÷ 450 × 100 = 90%
- Score needed on the final
- (target - current × (1 - final weight)) ÷ final weight
- Example: (90 - 88 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 96%
- Grade after the final
- current × (1 - final weight) + final score × final weight
- Example: 88 × 0.75 + 80 × 0.25 = 86%
- Test score
- (questions - wrong) ÷ questions × 100
- Example: (20 - 3) ÷ 20 × 100 = 85%
Letter grade scale: percentages for A to F
Most US high schools and colleges use the plus/minus scale below. Some stop at A (no A+), and many high schools use a simple 10-point scale (A 90, B 80, C 70, D 60). Your syllabus has the final word, and you can change every cutoff in the calculator.
| Letter | Percentage | Letter | Percentage |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ | 97 to 100 | C | 73 to 76.99 |
| A | 93 to 96.99 | C- | 70 to 72.99 |
| A- | 90 to 92.99 | D+ | 67 to 69.99 |
| B+ | 87 to 89.99 | D | 63 to 66.99 |
| B | 83 to 86.99 | D- | 60 to 62.99 |
| B- | 80 to 82.99 | F | Below 60 |
| C+ | 77 to 79.99 |

Example: an 88% going into a final worth 25%
Current grade 88%, final worth 25%, target 90%. The rest of the course counts for 75%, so you already have 88 × 0.75 = 66 points. You need (90 - 66) ÷ 0.25 = 96% on the final. With a 0 on the final you would still finish with 66% (D), and a perfect 100 gives 91% (A-). An 84% on the final keeps a B+ (87%), and a 72% keeps a B (84%).
What to expect from the result
The calculation assumes your current grade already includes everything except the final. If other work is still to be graded, use the Course grade tab and leave every unfinished category blank. If your final replaces your lowest test, counts as a test or is graded on a curve, the real result may differ.
Final Grade Calculator questions
How do you calculate what you need on a final?
Required score = (target grade - current grade × (1 - final weight)) ÷ final weight, with the weight as a decimal. With an 88% grade, a final worth 25% and a target of 90%: (90 - 88 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 96%.
What if the score I need is over 100%?
Then that grade is out of reach with the final alone. The calculator marks it as needing extra credit and shows the highest grade you can still reach with a perfect score. Look at the next letter down in the table.
What grade do I need on my final to pass?
Set the target to your school’s passing grade, usually 60% or 70%. If the score needed is 0% or less, you will pass even if you miss the final, though that is rarely a good idea.
How much will my final affect my grade?
Every point on the final moves your class grade by the final’s weight. If the final is worth 20%, scoring 10 points higher on it raises your grade by 2 points. The what-if table shows the grade for final scores from 50 to 100.
Can I use a letter grade for my current grade?
Yes. Type a letter such as B+ and it counts as the middle of that letter’s range on your grading scale (B+ = 88.5 on the standard scale, F = 50). For a target grade, a letter means the lowest percentage for that letter, so A- means 90.
