What is a grade calculator?

A grade calculator works out your overall grade in a class from the grades you already have. Most classes are graded with weighted categories: homework might be 20% of the grade, quizzes 15%, the midterm 25% and the final 25%. Others add up points, such as 412 out of 450. This calculator handles both, accepts scores as percentages, points or letters, and converts the result to a letter grade on a scale you can change. Because it knows which part of the course is still ungraded, it also tells you what you need on the remaining work, for every letter from A+ down to D-. A final exam tab and a test score tab cover the two other questions students ask most often.

How to calculate your grade

  1. Open the Course grade tab. Each row is a category from your syllabus, such as Homework or Midterm, with its weight in percent.
  2. Type your score for each category as a percentage, as points (44/50) or as a letter. Leave the score blank for work you have not done yet, such as the final.
  3. Read your current grade and letter. If part of the course is still to come, the table shows the average you need on it for each letter grade.
  4. Set a target grade to see the exact score you need, or click Use in final exam tab to plan the final in more detail.

Why use this grade calculator

  • Three calculators in oneCourse grade, final exam and test score are tabs on the same page and share one grading scale. Your course grade can be sent to the final exam tab in one click.
  • Type scores the way you have themEnter 88, 88%, 44/50, 18 out of 20 or a letter like B+. Extra credit above 100% is allowed. You never have to convert anything first.
  • What you need for every letterInstead of one answer for one target, you get a table with the score needed for an A, A-, B+ and every other grade, marked as already secured, reachable or not possible without extra credit.
  • Weights that do not add to 100If your weights add to 85%, the missing 15% is treated as work still to come. If they add to 120%, each weight counts as its share of 120. A note under the result says which.
  • Your school’s grading scaleChoose plus/minus with or without A+, or a simple 10-point scale, then edit any cutoff to match your syllabus. Every result updates at once.
  • Saved on your device, privateYour classes and scores are kept in this browser, so they are still there next time. Nothing is sent to a server and there is no account to create.

When students and teachers use it

  • Checking your grade against the syllabus. Copy the categories and weights from the syllabus, add your scores from Canvas, Blackboard or Google Classroom, and see where you stand.
  • Planning for finals week. See which classes need a big score on the final and which are already safe, so you can spend your study time where it matters.
  • Missing or late work. Leave a score blank to see the grade without it, or enter 0 to see what a missing assignment really costs.
  • What-if scenarios. Try a 70, an 85 and a 95 on the next test and watch the course grade change before you decide whether to retake a quiz or drop a class.
  • Grading tests and quizzes. Teachers can turn a number wrong into a percentage and letter in a second, or print the chart for a whole stack of papers.
  • Parents following progress. Enter the scores from the parent portal and see what your child needs on the rest of the term, explained in plain numbers.

Grade formulas, with examples

These are the formulas the calculator uses. Weights are percentages, or decimals where the formula says so (25% = 0.25).

Weighted grade
(score₁ × weight₁ + score₂ × weight₂ + …) ÷ (weight₁ + weight₂ + …)
Example: (95 × 20 + 88 × 15 + 82 × 25 + 90 × 15) ÷ 75 = 88.27%
Points grade
total points earned ÷ total points possible × 100
Example: 405 ÷ 450 × 100 = 90%
Score needed on the final
(target - current × (1 - final weight)) ÷ final weight
Example: (90 - 88 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 96%
Grade after the final
current × (1 - final weight) + final score × final weight
Example: 88 × 0.75 + 80 × 0.25 = 86%
Test score
(questions - wrong) ÷ questions × 100
Example: (20 - 3) ÷ 20 × 100 = 85%

Letter grade scale: percentages for A to F

Most US high schools and colleges use the plus/minus scale below. Some stop at A (no A+), and many high schools use a simple 10-point scale (A 90, B 80, C 70, D 60). Your syllabus has the final word, and you can change every cutoff in the calculator.

B+87 to 89.99D63 to 66.99
B83 to 86.99D-60 to 62.99
B-80 to 82.99FBelow 60

Example: a B+ with the final still to come

Homework 95 (20%), quizzes 88 (15%), midterm 82 (25%) and projects 90 (15%), with the final (25%) left blank. The graded 75% of the course averages (1,900 + 1,320 + 2,050 + 1,350) ÷ 75 = 88.27%, a B+. You already have 66.2 of the 100 course points. To finish with an A- (90%) you need (90 - 66.2) ÷ 0.25 = 95.2% on the final. A B+ (87%) needs 83.2%, and an A (93%) would need 107.2%, which is only possible with extra credit.

What to expect from the result

The result is only as accurate as the weights and scores you enter, so check them against your syllabus and gradebook. Some teachers drop the lowest quiz, curve a test, round 89.5 up or weight categories by points instead of percent; the calculator does not guess any of these. Letters typed as scores count as the middle of their range. Your school’s official grade is the one in its gradebook.

Grade Calculator questions

How do I calculate my grade in a class?

Multiply each category score by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total of the weights. For homework 95 (20%), quizzes 88 (15%), midterm 82 (25%) and projects 90 (15%): (95×20 + 88×15 + 82×25 + 90×15) ÷ 75 = 88.27%, a B+. Enter your categories in the Course grade tab and it does this for you.

What if my weights do not add up to 100%?

If they add to less than 100%, the rest of the course is treated as not graded yet, and the calculator tells you what you need on that remaining part. If they add to more than 100%, each weight counts as its share of the total, so weights of 60 and 60 are treated as 50% each. A note under the result says which rule was used.

What do I need on my final to get an A?

Leave the final’s score blank in the Course grade tab, or use the Final exam tab. The table shows the score you need for an A, an A- and every other letter. With an 88% average and a final worth 25%, you need 96% for a 90% A- and 108% for a 93% A.

Can I enter letter grades instead of percentages?

Yes. Type a letter such as B+ and it counts as the middle of that letter’s range on your grading scale (B+ = 88.5 on the standard scale, F = 50). For a target grade, a letter means the lowest percentage for that letter, so A- means 90.

Are my grades saved or shared?

Your classes, scores and grading scale are saved in your own browser so they are there when you come back. They are never sent to a server. Use Clear to remove them, or open the page in a private window if you do not want anything kept.
