What is a gamepad tester?
A gamepad tester reads your controller through the browser’s Gamepad API and shows every input live. This tester draws both analog sticks with their outer path, measures resting drift and compares it with a deadzone you choose, calculates a circularity error after you rotate each stick around its edge, shows analog trigger pressure, counts button presses and estimates how many input reports the controller sends per second. If the browser supports it, you can also test vibration.
How to test your controller
- Connect your controller by USB or Bluetooth and press any button so the browser detects it.
- Press every button and pull both triggers. Each one fills as you press and turns green once used.
- Rotate each stick slowly around its outer edge two or three times to measure circularity.
- Let go of both sticks and read the drift values. Select Test vibration to check the rumble motors.
Controller not detected?
- Press a button: browsers only reveal a gamepad after it is used on the page.
- Use USB first: wired connections are the most reliable. For Bluetooth, pair in system settings, then press a button.
- PlayStation controllers on Windows work in Chrome and Edge; Steam Input can hide them from other apps, so quit Steam if nothing appears.
- Safari and Firefox support fewer controllers. Try Chrome or Edge if yours is not listed.
Why use this gamepad tester
- Nothing leaves your deviceController input is processed by your browser on this device. There is no upload, no server-side recording and no account.
- Stick drift and circularityMeasures resting drift against your deadzone and scores how round each stick’s outer path is.
- Analog valuesSee exact trigger pressure and axis values to three decimals, plus how many times each button was pressed.
- Works with most controllersXbox, PlayStation DualSense and DualShock, Switch Pro, 8BitDo and generic USB or Bluetooth gamepads.
When to run a gamepad tester
- Stick drift. Check whether a stick moves on its own before buying a replacement.
- Second-hand controllers. Test every button and trigger before you pay.
- After repairs. Verify new Hall-effect sticks or button membranes.
- PC gaming. Confirm Windows sees the controller and every input maps correctly.
Checking a whole setup? Run the mic test, webcam test, keyboard test, mouse test, sound test, dead pixel test and refresh rate test, or browse all device tests.
Example: a DualSense that drifts left
With the stick untouched, Left drift reads 0.140, above a 10% deadzone, so games will see movement. Try a few full rotations and click the stick a few times, then let go. If the value stays high, clean or replace the stick module, or raise the in-game deadzone to around 15% as a workaround.
What to expect from the result
Button names follow the standard layout; controllers with non-standard mapping show numbered buttons. Vibration works only in browsers that expose the vibration actuator (mostly Chrome and Edge). Update rate is limited by the browser and display refresh, so it is an estimate rather than the true USB polling rate.
Gamepad Tester questions
How do I test my controller online?
Connect it by USB or Bluetooth, open this page and press any button. The tester shows all buttons, triggers and sticks live. Rotate the sticks and release them to check drift.
Does it work with PS5 and Xbox controllers?
Yes. Xbox One, Xbox Series, DualSense (PS5), DualShock 4 (PS4), Switch Pro and most generic controllers work, best in Chrome or Edge.
Why is my controller not showing up?
Browsers only show a controller after you press a button on this page. Use a USB cable if Bluetooth fails, and close Steam if it is taking over the controller.
What is a good circularity error?
Under about 10% is typical for healthy sticks. Higher values mean the stick does not reach the edge evenly in every direction, which can feel like slower turning on diagonals.
Can I test vibration?
Yes, in browsers that support the Gamepad vibration actuator, mainly Chrome and Edge. Select Test vibration and both motors should rumble for under a second.
