Mouse Test

Click every button and scroll the wheel. See each press light up, catch unwanted double clicks and estimate how often your mouse reports movement.

  • 5 buttons
  • Scroll wheel
  • Double-click detection
  • Pointer rate

What is a mouse test?

A mouse test shows which buttons and wheel movements your computer receives. This tester highlights left, right and middle buttons and the back and forward side buttons on a mouse diagram, counts every press, counts scroll steps in each direction, and flags any press that follows the previous one too quickly to be intentional, the classic sign of a failing switch. Move the mouse quickly to estimate how many position updates it sends per second.

How to test your mouse

  1. Move the pointer into the test box.
  2. Click left, right and middle (press the wheel), then the back and forward side buttons if your mouse has them. Each turns green once registered.
  3. Scroll up and down. The wheel counter should change by one step per notch.
  4. Single-click a few times. Any press flagged amber came less than the threshold after the last one.

Fixing mouse button problems

  • Unwanted double clicks are almost always a worn switch. Blowing out dust can help briefly; replacing the switch, or the mouse under warranty, fixes it.
  • Check software: some mouse utilities and accessibility settings change double-click speed or remap buttons.
  • Wireless mice: low batteries and interference can cause missed or repeated clicks. Charge it and move the receiver closer.
  • Scroll jumps: clean the wheel, and check whether smooth scrolling or a free-spin mode is enabled.

Why use this mouse test

  • Nothing leaves your deviceMouse input is processed by your browser on this device. There is no upload, no server-side recording and no account.
  • Every buttonBack and forward buttons are captured without navigating away, and right-click menus are blocked inside the box.
  • Finds switch wearUnwanted double clicks are flagged with the exact time between presses.
  • No download or driverRuns in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, Android and iPhone.

When to run a mouse test

  • Gaming mice. Check side buttons and wheel clicks your games use.
  • Double-click problems. Prove a faulty switch for a warranty claim.
  • Wireless mice. Spot missed clicks caused by interference or low battery.
  • Second-hand mice. Test every button before you buy.

Example: files open when you single-click

Single-click the left button 20 times. Three presses are flagged at 12–30 ms apart. Human double clicks are rarely under 60 ms, so the switch is bouncing. Contact the manufacturer if it is under warranty, or replace the switch.

What to expect from the result

Pointer rate is the number of movement events the browser delivers, which is often capped by the browser or display, so it may read lower than a 1000 Hz or higher USB polling rate. Extra buttons beyond the five standard ones are usually handled by the mouse software and do not reach the browser.

Mouse Test questions

How do I test my mouse buttons?

Click each button inside the test box. The matching part of the mouse diagram lights up and turns green, and the count for that button goes up.

Can I test the back and forward side buttons?

Yes. Side buttons are captured inside the box without the browser going back or forward.

How do I test the scroll wheel?

Scroll up and down inside the box. The wheel counter goes up for each step and shows the last scroll distance.

Can this test my mouse polling rate?

It estimates how many movement events per second the browser receives. Browsers often cap this, so a 1000 Hz mouse may show less.

What causes a mouse to double-click on its own?

A worn or dirty micro-switch that bounces, registering one press as two. The double-click test flags presses closer together than you could click intentionally.
