What is a webcam test?

A webcam test opens your camera in the browser and reports what it is actually sending, which is often different from the box. This tool shows a live preview with an optional framing grid, the resolution in use, the measured frame rate from real decoded frames, the aspect ratio and megapixels, and the maximum resolution and frame rate the camera reports. It can probe 4K, 1440p, 1080p, 720p and 480p one by one, checks whether your lighting is too dark, and lets you take a photo or record a 15-second clip to review.

How to test your webcam

  1. Select Start webcam test and allow camera access when your browser asks.
  2. Check the preview. If the image is black, choose another camera from the list or close apps that may be using it.
  3. Read the resolution, frame rate and lighting advice. Select Check supported resolutions to see the highest mode your camera accepts.
  4. Take a photo or record a short clip to review sharpness, colour and lip sync before an important call.

Camera not working? Try these fixes

  • Allow access: click the camera icon in the address bar, set Camera to Allow and reload.
  • Check the privacy shutter or function key: many laptops have a sliding cover or an F-key that disables the camera.
  • Close other apps: only one app can use a camera on some systems. Quit Zoom, Teams, OBS or the Camera app and try again.
  • Operating system permissions: on Windows, Settings › Privacy & security › Camera; on macOS, System Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera, then allow your browser.
  • Try another USB port or cable for external webcams, and avoid unpowered hubs.

Why use this webcam test

  • Nothing leaves your deviceYour video is processed by your browser on this device. There is no upload, no server-side recording and no account.
  • Measured, not guessedFrame rate comes from real frames as they arrive, so you see whether a “1080p 60 fps” camera really delivers it.
  • Resolution probeTries each common resolution in turn and tells you which ones the camera actually supports.
  • No download or driverRuns in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, Android and iPhone.

When to run a webcam test

  • Before video calls. Check framing, lighting and focus before Zoom, Teams or Google Meet.
  • Buying or returning a webcam. Verify the advertised resolution and frame rate in seconds.
  • Laptop camera problems. Find out whether the camera, the driver or one app is at fault.
  • Streaming setup. Compare cameras and lighting before going live.

Example: a 1080p webcam showing 720p

The preview shows 1280×720 at 30 fps. Select Check supported resolutions: if 1080p is listed as supported, your call app is choosing a lower mode, often because of bandwidth or a USB 2 port. If 1080p fails, the camera is falling back. Try a USB 3 port and check the lighting advice, because many webcams drop frame rate in dim rooms.

What to expect from the result

Browsers may cap resolution or frame rate, and some cameras only reach their maximum in specific apps. The frame rate is measured in this tab and can drop when the tab is in the background. The tool does not test autofocus quality or microphone sync.

Webcam Test questions

How do I test my webcam?

Select Start webcam test and allow camera access. If you see yourself in the preview, the camera works. The panel shows the resolution and measured frame rate, and you can take a test photo or clip.

Is this webcam test safe and private?

Yes. Video is shown and analysed by your browser on your device. Nothing is uploaded or recorded on a server. Photos and clips exist only in this tab unless you save them.

Why is my webcam showing a black screen?

Usually the privacy shutter is closed, another app is using the camera, or camera permission is blocked in the browser or operating system. Choose another camera from the list or follow the fixes above.

How can I check my webcam resolution and FPS?

Start the test and read the Resolution and Frame rate cards. Select Check supported resolutions to test 4K, 1440p, 1080p, 720p and 480p one after another.

Why is my webcam frame rate low?

Webcams lower their frame rate in dim light to collect more light per frame. Add light in front of you, close other camera apps and use a USB 3 port.
