What is a click counter?

A click counter is the online version of a hand tally counter: each click, tap or key press adds one to a number on the screen. People use it to count visitors, laps, reps, items on a shelf, birds, votes or anything else that is easier to tap than to remember. This one counts up and down, lets you change the step (count by 2, 5 or 10), set a goal with a progress bar, and run several named counters side by side. It works with a mouse, a touch screen or the keyboard, keeps a time-stamped list of changes and saves everything locally, so you can close the page and carry on later.

How to use the click counter

  1. Tap or click the big number, or press Space, to add one. The count goes up by the step you set, which starts at 1.
  2. Press the minus button, the Down arrow or the - key to take one away when you miscount.
  3. Open Options under the counter to rename it, count by a different step, type in a starting value or set a goal with a progress bar.
  4. Select Add counter to count more than one thing. Keys 1 to 9 add to each counter, so you can keep your eyes on what you are counting.
  5. When you are done, select Save CSV for a spreadsheet of totals and every change with its time, or Copy to paste the totals anywhere.

Why use this click counter

  • Your count is savedEvery change is saved in this browser as you go. Close the tab, reload or come back tomorrow and the numbers are still there. Nothing is sent to a server.
  • Mistakes are easy to fixUndo steps back through your last 100 changes, including a reset, so a stray tap never costs you the count.
  • Built for keyboard and touchPress Space or tap a large target. Holding a key does not run the count away, and Space never scrolls the page while you count.
  • A record, not just a numberEvery change is listed with the time it happened and can be saved as a CSV for Excel or Google Sheets.
  • No app, no sign-upIt runs in Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox on phones, tablets and computers. Add it to your home screen and it opens like an app.

Common uses for a click counter

  • People and footfall. Count visitors at a door, attendees in a room or customers in a queue.
  • Inventory and stock takes. Count boxes, items on a shelf or products scanned by hand.
  • Sport and fitness. Laps, reps, jumps, skips or pitches thrown.
  • Surveys and research. Cars passing, birds seen, or how often something happens in a lesson or meeting.
  • Habits and practice. Glasses of water, practice runs, or pages read today.
  • Games. Points, turns or rounds when you do not need a full scoreboard.

Online click counter, hand tally counter or app?

A metal hand counter is great when you cannot look at a screen, but it only counts one thing and only goes up unless you buy a model with a minus button. Phone apps work offline but need installing, and many ask for an account or show full-screen ads. An online counter opens in a second on any device you already have.

Example: counting visitors at a school open day

Set the counter name to "Visitors" and keep the page open on a phone at the entrance. Tap once for each person who walks in, or press Space on a laptop. At 11:30 the count reads 148. Undo fixes the time a family of three was counted twice. At the end of the day, Save CSV gives you the total plus a list of every tap with its time, so you can see the busy hour at a glance.

What to expect from the result

The count is kept in this browser on this device. It does not sync between phones or computers, and clearing site data removes it, so save a CSV for anything you need to keep. Counts go up to one billion. The page counts each tap or key press it receives, so a bouncing mouse button or a worn key can add an extra count; undo removes it.

Click counter questions

How do I use an online click counter?

Tap or click the big number, or press Space, and the count goes up by one. Use the minus button or the Down arrow to go back one. The count is saved automatically, so you can close the page and return to it later.

Which keyboard shortcuts can I use?

Space, Up arrow or + adds one. Down arrow or - takes one away. Keys 1 to 9 add to that counter, and Shift with the number subtracts. Left and Right arrows pick a counter, and Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on a Mac) undoes the last change. Holding a key down counts once, not over and over.

Can I count by 2, 5 or 10?

Yes. Open Options under the counter and change Step. Every tap then adds that amount and minus takes it away. Each counter has its own step.

Can I have more than one counter?

Yes. Select Add counter for up to 24 named counters. Each has its own step and goal, and the total of all counters is shown next to them. For a layout built around several tallies with tally marks, use the tally counter.

Is my count stored online?

No. The counter runs in your browser and saves to this browser’s local storage only. There is no account and no upload. Clearing your site data or using a private window removes the saved count, so save a CSV if you need a permanent record.

Does the click counter work on a phone?

Yes. Tap the big number to count. It works in any mobile browser, and you can turn on vibration so you feel each tap without looking at the screen.
