What is a people counter?

A people counter keeps track of how many people are in a room, shop or venue. Electronic counters use sensors over the door; this one is the manual kind, run by a person at the entrance, and it needs only a phone. Tap In for each person entering and Out for each person leaving. The big number is the current occupancy. Set a capacity and the display turns amber when you are near it and red when you are full, so door staff know when to hold the queue. It also shows the total number of visitors, the total who left and the peak occupancy, and the CSV lists every entry and exit with its time.

How to count people in and out

  1. Type your capacity: the most people allowed inside at once. Leave it blank if there is no limit.
  2. Tap In, or press Space or the Up arrow, for each person who enters.
  3. Tap Out, or press the Down arrow, for each person who leaves. The count never goes below zero.
  4. Watch the colour: green is fine, amber means 90% full, red means at or over capacity.
  5. At the end, select Save CSV for total visitors, peak occupancy and a time-stamped list of every entry and exit.

Why use this people counter

  • Occupancy, not just a tallySeparate In and Out buttons give you the number inside now as well as total visitors.
  • Capacity at a glanceGreen, amber and red so door staff know when to stop letting people in.
  • No hardware, no subscriptionA phone at the door is enough. No sensors, no account and no monthly fee.
  • A time-stamped recordEvery entry and exit is logged with its time and can be saved as a CSV.
  • Your count is savedEvery change is saved in this browser as you go. Close the tab, reload or come back tomorrow and the numbers are still there. Nothing is sent to a server.

Where a people counter helps

  • Venues and bars. Keep within the licensed capacity on busy nights.
  • Shops and pop-ups. Limit how many customers are inside and count footfall.
  • Events and open days. Total attendance and the busiest hour.
  • Churches, halls and classrooms. Headcounts for safety and records.
  • Tours and buses. Make sure everyone who got off got back on.
  • Museums and galleries. Timed rooms with a maximum number of visitors.

Tips for counting people at the door

  • Set the capacity to the limit for your room or venue, which your venue manager, licence or local fire rules give you.
  • Count at one entrance where you can. With two doors, give each door its own phone and add the Inside totals together; each phone counts on its own.
  • Start before doors open and tap In once for each person already inside, such as staff and performers, so the number reflects everyone in the building.
  • Save the CSV at the end of the night. The times of each In and Out show when the rush started and when to add staff.

Only need a running total of visitors, not occupancy? Use the click counter.

Example: a 120-person venue on a busy night

Set capacity to 120. Door staff tap In for each guest and Out for anyone leaving. At 10:40 pm the display turns amber at 108 inside, and red at 120: new guests wait until someone leaves. By closing, total visitors reads 286 with a peak of 120 at 11:15 pm. The CSV shows when the rush started, which helps plan staff for next week.

What to expect from the result

Counts do not sync between devices. With two entrances, count each door on its own phone and add the totals, or run entrances through one counter. The count depends on the person tapping, so it is only as accurate as the door staff. Check local rules for the legal capacity of your space; this tool does not know it.

People counter questions

How does an online people counter work?

Tap In for each person entering and Out for each person leaving. The large number is how many people are inside now. It also adds up total visitors, total exits and the highest number inside at any time.

Can it warn me when we reach capacity?

Yes. Type your capacity and the counter turns amber at 90% and red when you are full or over, with a chime and vibration when you reach it. It keeps counting if you go over, so you know by how many.

Can two people count at different doors?

Each phone keeps its own count, because nothing is sent to a server. Give each door its own phone and add the totals at the end, or use one counter at a single entrance.

Can I get a record of the count?

Yes. Save CSV gives totals plus a list of every In and Out with its time, which opens in Excel or Google Sheets for an hourly breakdown.

Is my count stored online?

No. The counter runs in your browser and saves to this browser’s local storage only. There is no account and no upload. Clearing your site data or using a private window removes the saved count, so save a CSV if you need a permanent record.
