What is a stitch counter?
A stitch counter, or row counter, keeps track of where you are in a knitting or crochet pattern. Physical ones slide onto a needle or hang on a cord, and they are easy to forget to click. This online version has two counters ready: Rows and Stitches. Set rows per repeat and it tells you which row of the repeat you are on and how many repeats are finished, which is what lace, cable and colourwork patterns ask for. Set stitches per row and the stitch counter shows a progress bar; Next row adds a row and clears the stitches in one tap. Rename the counters or add more for sleeves, motifs or rounds.
How to use the row and stitch counter
- If your pattern repeats, type the rows per repeat on the Rows card, for example 8 for an 8-row cable.
- For counting stitches, type stitches per row on the Stitches card so you can see how far along the row you are.
- Tap Rows, or press Space, at the end of every row. Tap Stitches as you go, or press 2 on a keyboard.
- Select Next row (or press N) to add a row and set the stitches back to zero in one go.
- Put your work down whenever you like. Your rows and stitches are saved in this browser until you reset them.
Why use this stitch counter
- Rows, repeats and stitches togetherKnow your row, your place in the repeat and your stitches without three separate clickers.
- Never lose your placeThe count is saved as you go, even if the battery dies or the tab closes.
- One-tap next rowAdds a row and clears the stitches, so long rows are easy to keep track of.
- Mistakes are easy to fixUndo steps back through your last 100 changes, including a reset, so a stray tap never costs you the count.
- No app, no sign-upIt runs in Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox on phones, tablets and computers. Add it to your home screen and it opens like an app.

Rows, rounds and repeats explained
| Term | What it means | How to count it here |
|---|---|---|
| Row | One pass across flat knitting or crochet | Tap Rows or press Space at the end of each row |
| Round | One full circle in the round | Rename Rows to Rounds and count the same way |
| Repeat | A block of rows that repeats, such as an 8-row cable | Set rows per repeat to see your row within it |
| Stitch count | Stitches worked in the current row | Set stitches per row and tap Stitches, then Next row |
For simple tallies, like counting finished granny squares, the tally counter keeps several counts side by side.
Example: a cable scarf with an 8-row repeat
Set rows per repeat to 8 and stitches per row to 36. Knit across, tap Stitches for each cable crossing if you like, and select Next row at the end. After row 27 the Rows card reads "Row 3 of 8, 3 repeats done", so you know the cable cross comes up on row 5 of this repeat. Close the tab for the night and the count is waiting tomorrow.
What to expect from the result
The counter stores your place in this browser on this device; a phone and a laptop each keep their own count. It does not read your pattern, so you need to know which row of the repeat has the special stitch. Clearing site data removes the saved count, so note it down for long projects.
Stitch counter questions
What is the difference between a row counter and a stitch counter?
A row counter counts finished rows or rounds. A stitch counter counts stitches within a row, which helps on long rows, increases and decreases. This page has both, and Next row adds a row and clears the stitches together.
How do I track pattern repeats?
Type the rows per repeat on the Rows card. The card then shows which row of the repeat you are on and how many full repeats are done, while the total row count keeps going.
Does it work for crochet rounds?
Yes. Rename Rows to Rounds and count the same way. Use the stitch counter for stitches per round, or add more counters for each motif or granny square.
Will it save my place if I close the page?
Yes. Everything is saved in your browser as you count and comes back when you open the page again on the same device and browser.
Can I use it hands-free while knitting?
With a laptop or a keyboard nearby, yes: Space adds a row, 2 adds a stitch, N moves to the next row and Ctrl+Z undoes. On a phone or tablet, the buttons are large enough to tap with a knuckle.
