What is a college GPA?

Your college GPA is the average grade point of every graded course you take, weighted by credit hours, so a 4 credit class moves your GPA more than a 1 credit lab. Each term has a semester (or quarter) GPA, and your cumulative GPA combines all of them. Most US colleges use a 4.0 scale with plus and minus grades, where an A- is 3.7 and a B+ is 3.3; some give an A+ 4.0, others 4.3 or 4.33. College GPAs are usually unweighted, and pass/fail, withdrawn and incomplete grades do not count. This college GPA calculator follows those rules and lets you change any of them to match your registrar.

How to calculate your college GPA

  1. Type each course with its credit hours (usually 3 or 4) and the letter grade you earned or expect.
  2. Set “A+ counts as” to your college’s value and turn off plus and minus grades if your school does not use them.
  3. For your cumulative GPA, enter the GPA and GPA credit hours from your unofficial transcript under “Add your current GPA”.
  4. Add more semesters to plan ahead, then use “What GPA do I need?” to see the term GPA that gets you to your target.

GPA formulas used by this calculator

Semester GPA
GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ creditsGrade points times credits gives the quality points for each class. Add them and divide by the credits that received a grade.
Weighted GPA
Weighted GPA = Σ((grade points + bonus) × credits) ÷ Σ creditsAdd the level bonus to each passing grade first: Honors +0.5, AP / IB +1.0, dual enrollment +1.0 by default.
Cumulative GPA
Cumulative = (current GPA × current credits + new quality points) ÷ (current credits + new credits)Never average semester GPAs directly. Each term counts in proportion to its credits.
GPA needed next term
Needed = (target × (current credits + next credits) - current quality points) ÷ next creditsIf the answer is above the top of your scale, the target needs more than one term.

GPA scale: letter grades, percentages and grade points

This is the standard 4.0 scale the calculator starts with. Many colleges give an A+ 4.3 or 4.33, and many high schools use 90/80/70 cutoffs without plus and minus grades. You can change any value with Edit grade scale.

Why use this college GPA calculator

  • Every semester on one pageAdd as many terms as you need. Each one shows its own GPA, and the panel on the right keeps a running cumulative GPA across all of them.
  • Know what you need next termType a target GPA and the credits you will take, and the planner tells you the average you need, or how many credits it takes if the goal is out of reach this term.
  • Your school’s scale, not oursTurn plus and minus grades on or off, set A+ to 4.0, 4.3 or 4.33, and edit every grade point and percentage cutoff in the scale table.
  • A clean PDF reportDownload or print a one-page summary with every course, each term’s GPA, your cumulative GPA and your goal. Handy for advisors, counselors and scholarship forms.
  • Private and freeNo account, no email and no limit. Your grades are saved in this browser only, so they are still here next time and never reach a server.
  • Letters or percentagesEnter A, B+ or C, or type the percentage from your report card. The calculator shows the matching letter so you can check it against your school’s scale.

What college students use it for

  • Before and after finals. Try different final grades to see where your semester GPA will land, then enter the real grades when they post.
  • Getting off academic probation. Find the term GPA you need to climb back above a 2.0 or the minimum your program sets.
  • Transfer and graduate school. Combine your transcript GPA with this term’s grades to see the cumulative GPA a transfer or grad school application will show.
  • Honor roll and Latin honors. Check whether you are on track for the honor roll, dean’s list or cum laude cutoffs your school uses.
  • Counselors and advisors. Run what-if plans with a student and hand them a printed report to take home.
  • Internships and grad school. Check the GPA you will list on a résumé or a graduate application before you submit it.

Example: semester and cumulative GPA in college

You finished 45 credits with a 3.20 GPA, which is 144 quality points. This fall you take 15 credits and earn 52.3 quality points, a 3.49 semester GPA. Your new cumulative GPA is (144 + 52.3) ÷ (45 + 15) = 196.3 ÷ 60 = 3.27. The semester GPA was well above your old average, but because it is only a quarter of your credits it lifts the cumulative GPA by 0.07.

What to expect from the result

Results use the grade points, percentage cutoffs and credits you enter, so they match your official GPA when those match your school’s rules. Retaken classes, transfer credit, grade forgiveness and school-specific rounding are not applied automatically: remove or adjust those classes yourself. GPAs are shown to two decimals.

College GPA Calculator questions

How do I calculate cumulative GPA?

Multiply your current GPA by the credits it covers to get your quality points so far, add the quality points from your new classes, then divide by all the credits together. A 3.20 over 45 credits plus a 3.49 term over 15 credits is (144 + 52.3) ÷ 60 = 3.27.

How many credits is a college class?

Most lecture courses are 3 credit hours, science courses with a lab are often 4, and labs or seminars on their own can be 1. Use the credits printed on your schedule or transcript, including half credits such as 1.5.

What is an A+ or an A- worth?

On the most common 4.0 scale an A- is 3.7, a B+ is 3.3 and a B- is 2.7. An A+ is usually 4.0, but some colleges give 4.3 or 4.33. Pick your school’s value next to “A+ counts as”, or edit any grade in the scale table.

Do pass/fail, withdrawn and incomplete grades count?

Usually not. P, NP, W and I grades carry no grade points, so this calculator leaves them out of both the credits and the GPA. Some schools count an NP or a late withdrawal as an F; if yours does, enter F instead.

Does retaking a class replace the old grade?

It depends on the college. Many replace the old grade in the GPA (grade forgiveness), others average both attempts or count both. To model a replacement, remove the old grade’s credits and quality points from your current GPA and enter the new grade here.

Will this match my official GPA?

It will if you use your school’s grade points and credits. Small differences can come from repeated classes, transfer credit, rounding (some schools truncate to two decimals) or grades your school leaves out. Your transcript is always the final word.
