How is middle school GPA calculated?

Most middle schools do not use credit hours, so a middle school GPA is simply the average of your grade points: turn each class grade into points on the 4.0 scale (A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0), add them up and divide by the number of classes. Report cards often show percentages instead of letters, so this middle school GPA calculator converts them for you with the common 93/90/87 cutoffs, which you can change. Middle school grades do not appear on college applications, but they can decide placement in Honors or advanced classes in high school.

How to use the middle school GPA calculator

  1. Type each class and the percentage from the report card. Prefer letters? Choose Letters at the top.
  2. Leave Credit hours off so every class counts the same. Turn it on if your school gives some classes more weight.
  3. Read the GPA on the right. Add another term to see the GPA for the whole year.
  4. Set a goal, such as 3.5 for the honor roll, and see the average you need next term.

GPA formulas used by this calculator

Semester GPA
GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ creditsGrade points times credits gives the quality points for each class. Add them and divide by the credits that received a grade.
Weighted GPA
Weighted GPA = Σ((grade points + bonus) × credits) ÷ Σ creditsAdd the level bonus to each passing grade first: Honors +0.5, AP / IB +1.0, dual enrollment +1.0 by default.
Cumulative GPA
Cumulative = (current GPA × current credits + new quality points) ÷ (current credits + new credits)Never average semester GPAs directly. Each term counts in proportion to its credits.
GPA needed next term
Needed = (target × (current credits + next credits) - current quality points) ÷ next creditsIf the answer is above the top of your scale, the target needs more than one term.

GPA scale: letter grades, percentages and grade points

This is the standard 4.0 scale the calculator starts with. Many colleges give an A+ 4.3 or 4.33, and many high schools use 90/80/70 cutoffs without plus and minus grades. You can change any value with Edit grade scale.

Why use this middle school GPA calculator

  • Letters or percentagesEnter A, B+ or C, or type the percentage from your report card. The calculator shows the matching letter so you can check it against your school’s scale.
  • No credits neededSwitch off credit hours and every class counts equally, which is how most middle schools and many report cards work out a GPA.
  • Every semester on one pageAdd as many terms as you need. Each one shows its own GPA, and the panel on the right keeps a running cumulative GPA across all of them.
  • Know what you need next termType a target GPA and the credits you will take, and the planner tells you the average you need, or how many credits it takes if the goal is out of reach this term.
  • Your school’s scale, not oursTurn plus and minus grades on or off, set A+ to 4.0, 4.3 or 4.33, and edit every grade point and percentage cutoff in the scale table.
  • Private and freeNo account, no email and no limit. Your grades are saved in this browser only, so they are still here next time and never reach a server.

Who uses it

  • Parents checking report cards. Turn a report card full of percentages into a GPA in a minute, without signing up for anything.
  • Honor roll and Latin honors. Check whether you are on track for the honor roll, dean’s list or cum laude cutoffs your school uses.
  • High school placement. See whether grades meet the GPA some schools ask for before placing students in Honors or advanced math.
  • Athletic eligibility. Keep an eye on the minimum GPA your school or league sets for playing sports.
  • Setting goals with your child. Pick a target GPA together and see exactly what grades next term would get there.
  • Counselors and advisors. Run what-if plans with a student and hand them a printed report to take home.

Need your grade in one class rather than your GPA? Use the grade calculator for weighted assignments, or the final grade calculator to see the score you need on a final exam. For quick sums try the percentage calculator or the average calculator. When it is time to study, the Pomodoro timer keeps you focused, the citation generator formats your references, and the math editor writes equations for homework.

Example: a 7th grade report card

Math 94% (A = 4.0), Science 88% (B+ = 3.3), English 91% (A- = 3.7), Social Studies 85% (B = 3.0), Spanish 97% (A+ = 4.0) and Art 79% (C+ = 2.3). Add the points: 4.0 + 3.3 + 3.7 + 3.0 + 4.0 + 2.3 = 20.3. Divide by 6 classes: 20.3 ÷ 6 = 3.38, a B+ average.

What to expect from the result

Middle schools use many different scales: some skip plus and minus grades, some use 90/80/70 cutoffs, and some use standards-based marks (1 to 4) instead of letters. Adjust the grade scale table to match your report card, or enter the 1 to 4 marks as grade points. Results are estimates.

Middle School GPA Calculator questions

How do I calculate my middle school GPA?

Turn each grade into points (A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0, with plus and minus grades in between), add the points and divide by the number of classes. Six classes worth 20.3 points give a 3.38 GPA.

Does middle school GPA matter?

Colleges do not see it, but high schools may use it for placement in Honors or advanced classes, magnet or private school admission, and some honor societies. It is also good practice for tracking your grades in high school.

What is a good GPA in middle school?

A 3.0 (B average) is solid and a 3.5 or higher usually makes the honor roll. Check your school’s handbook for the exact cutoffs it uses.

Can I enter percentages instead of letter grades?

Yes. Choose Percent at the top and type each class percentage. The calculator turns it into a letter with the cutoffs in the grade scale table (93% and up is an A by default) and shows the letter next to the box. Edit the cutoffs if your school uses a 90/80/70 scale.

Should every class count the same?

In most middle schools yes, which is why Credit hours is off here. If your school gives core classes more weight than electives, switch Credit hours on and give those classes a higher number.
