What does flipping an image do?
Flipping an image reverses it along one axis. A horizontal flip swaps left and right, so the picture looks like its reflection in a mirror. A vertical flip swaps top and bottom, like a reflection in still water. Flipping is not the same as rotating: a rotated photo is turned around its center, while a flipped photo is reversed, so any text in it reads backwards. This page opens the photo editor with flip buttons above the picture. If your image has several layers, you can also flip just one of them, for example a person or a logo, and leave the rest as it is.
How to flip an image
- Choose Open File and select the image, or drop it on the page. JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and more are supported.
- Choose Horizontal (mirror) to swap left and right, or Vertical (upside down) to swap top and bottom. Press again to undo the flip.
- To flip only one part, add it as a layer, select it and use the flip buttons in the panel on the right.
- Choose Save image and pick PNG, JPG or WebP. The file keeps its original width and height.

Horizontal flip, vertical flip or rotate?
| What changes | Text in the image | |
|---|---|---|
| Flip horizontally | Left and right swap, like a mirror | Reads backwards |
| Flip vertically | Top and bottom swap, like a lake reflection | Upside down and backwards |
| Rotate 180° | Turned upside down around the center | Upside down but not mirrored |
Need to turn the picture instead? Use the rotate image tool.
Example: fixing a mirrored selfie
Front cameras often save selfies the way you see yourself in a mirror, so a shirt logo or a sign behind you reads backwards. Open the selfie, choose Horizontal (mirror) once and the text reads the right way round. Save as JPG at 90% quality and the result looks the same as the original, just reversed.
What to expect from the result
A flipped JPG or WebP is saved again, so it goes through compression one more time. At 90% quality or higher the difference is very hard to see; choose PNG if you need a lossless copy. Photo metadata such as the camera model and location is not carried over to the saved file.
Flip image FAQ
How do I mirror an image?
Open it on this page and choose Horizontal (mirror). The left and right sides swap, exactly like a reflection. Then choose Save image to download it.
What is the difference between flipping and rotating?
Rotating turns the picture around its center, so it stays readable and just points a different way. Flipping reverses it along a line, so text appears backwards. Flipping horizontally twice, or vertically twice, brings the image back to the original.
Does flipping reduce image quality?
The flip itself is exact. The only loss can come from saving as JPG or WebP again. Keep the quality at 90% or more, or save as PNG for a lossless file.
Can I flip only part of a picture?
You can flip any single layer. Add the part you want to flip as its own image, select it and use the flip buttons in the panel. The rest of the picture stays as it is.
Can I flip an iPhone HEIC photo?
Yes. HEIC photos open directly in Safari and are converted on your device in other browsers. Save the flipped result as JPG or PNG so it opens everywhere.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. The editor runs in your browser tab and reads your files directly from your device. There is no upload step, no account and no server copy. When you close the tab, the working copy is gone unless you saved it.
