A photo editor made for Chromebooks
Chromebooks run web apps best, and this editor is a web app. It needs no Play Store, no Linux setup and no extension, which matters on school and work Chromebooks where those are often turned off by an administrator. It opens photos from the Files app, Google Drive and the clipboard, including screenshots you take with the Screen capture key. You get layers, text with outlines and shadows, cropping, rotating, flipping, canvas resizing and filters, and it runs smoothly on low-cost Chromebooks because the work is done by the browser's own graphics engine.

Photo editing options on a Chromebook
| Option | Good for | Catch |
|---|---|---|
| Gallery app (built in) | Quick crops, rotation and light fixes | No layers or text styling |
| Android apps from the Play Store | Phone-style filters and effects | Play Store is often turned off on school devices; many apps are subscriptions |
| GIMP through Linux | Advanced painting and retouching | Linux must be enabled, uses a lot of storage and memory |
| Photopea | Photoshop-style editing in the browser | Ads on the free version, many menus to learn |
| This editor | Layers, text, crop, rotate, resize and filters | No brush or selection tools yet |
Example: a class project poster
Start a blank A4 canvas, paste three screenshots from your research and drag them into a column. Add a title with the Highlight style and short captions under each image. Use the snapping guides to line everything up, then export a PNG and attach it to your Google Classroom assignment. None of the screenshots were uploaded anywhere along the way.
What to expect from the result
The editor needs Chrome and a reasonably recent version of ChromeOS. Very large photos above about 50 megapixels are scaled down to keep older Chromebooks responsive. There are no brush or selection tools yet; for those, Photopea in the browser or GIMP through Linux are options if your Chromebook allows them.
Chromebook photo editing FAQ
Can you edit photos on a Chromebook?
Yes. The built-in Gallery app handles basic crops and light fixes, and browser editors like this one add layers, text, shapes, filters and canvas resizing without installing anything.
Is there a free version of Photoshop for Chromebook?
Adobe's browser and app options need an Adobe account, and the full Photoshop tools need a paid plan. If you want layers and text without an account, this editor is free and opens PSD files too.
Does it work on a school Chromebook?
Usually, yes. It is a normal web page, so it works wherever websites are allowed, even when the Play Store, Linux and extensions are turned off. If your school blocks the site, ask your administrator.
Will it slow down my Chromebook?
It is built to stay light. The page itself is small, the editing code loads only when it is needed, and drawing uses the graphics hardware through the browser. Large photos are scaled to a safe size automatically.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. The editor runs in your browser tab and reads your files directly from your device. There is no upload step, no account and no server copy. When you close the tab, the working copy is gone unless you saved it.
Is it really free? Is there a watermark?
Yes, it is free with no watermark, no daily save limit, no premium fonts and no sign-up. Every feature on the page is available to everyone.
