What is this photo editor?

It is a free, simple photo editor that works with layers, the way Photoshop does, but without the learning curve. Every photo, text box, shape and background is its own layer that you can move, resize, rotate, crop, flip, hide, lock or fade without touching the others. You can open an image or start with a blank canvas in a social media size, resize the canvas at any time and paste images straight from the clipboard. Text comes with 19 fonts, outlines, drop shadows and background boxes. The whole editor runs in your browser, so your pictures stay on your computer or phone.

How to use the photo editor

  1. Choose Open File, drop a photo on the editor or press Ctrl+V to paste one. To start from scratch, pick a blank canvas size such as Instagram post or YouTube thumbnail.
  2. Add more pictures with Image or by pasting them. Each one becomes a new layer you can drag, resize from the corners and rotate with the round handle.
  3. Choose Text to type on the photo. Pick a font, color and alignment, then add an outline, shadow or background box in the panel on the right.
  4. Select any layer to crop it, flip it, rotate it 90°, change its opacity or blend mode, or apply brightness, contrast and filter presets. Use the Canvas menu to resize, crop, rotate or flip the whole picture.
  5. Choose Export and save as PNG, JPG or WebP, copy the image to the clipboard, or save a PSD that keeps every layer.

Why edit photos here

  • Private by designYour photos are opened and edited inside the browser tab. There is nothing to upload, so there is nothing to leak or delete later.
  • Layers without the complexityStack photos, text and shapes and change any of them at any time. One panel shows the options for whatever you select.
  • No limits or upsellsNo watermark, no account, no daily save cap and no locked fonts. Save as often as you like.
  • Full quality outExport at the original size or larger, choose the JPG or WebP quality, and see the file size before you download.
  • Works with PSD filesOpen a PSD and edit its layers, or save your work as a layered PSD for Photoshop, Photopea or GIMP.

Common uses

  • Captions, quotes and memes on photos for Instagram, WhatsApp or Facebook
  • YouTube thumbnails, blog headers and link preview images in the right size
  • Before and after pictures, or two photos side by side on a wider canvas
  • Adding a logo or a watermark to product photos
  • Labelling screenshots with arrows, boxes and text for a guide or a bug report
  • Quick fixes: crop, straighten, brighten or turn a sideways phone photo upright

How it compares with Photopea, Pixlr, Canva and BeFunky

Photopea is the closest thing to Photoshop in a browser and is the better choice if you need masks, brushes and selections. Canva and BeFunky are built around templates and AI features, with your photos stored on their servers. This editor sits in between: real layers and good text tools, with nothing to learn, no account and no uploads.

Example: a YouTube thumbnail in two minutes

Start a 1280 × 720 blank canvas, paste a screenshot from your video and drag it to fill the frame. Open a photo of your face, crop it close and place it on the right. Add a text layer with the Meme style for a bold white title with a black outline, tilt it a few degrees with the round handle and drag it until the pink guide shows it is lined up. Export a JPG at 90% quality: it comes out well under YouTube's 2 MB limit.

What to expect from the result

This is a layer editor, not a pixel painting program. There are no selection, brush, eraser or clone tools yet, so you cannot cut out part of a photo or paint over it here. Use the background remover or object remover for that, then bring the result in as a layer. PSD files open as pixel layers: text stays visible but is no longer editable text, and adjustment layers and masks are flattened into the pixels Photoshop saved. Very large images are scaled down to what your browser can handle (about 50 megapixels, or 16 on iPhone and iPad).

Photo editor FAQ

Is it really free? Is there a watermark?

Yes, it is free with no watermark, no daily save limit, no premium fonts and no sign-up. Every feature on the page is available to everyone.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The editor runs in your browser tab and reads your files directly from your device. There is no upload step, no account and no server copy. When you close the tab, the working copy is gone unless you saved it.

How do I put text on a photo?

Open the photo, choose Text in the toolbar and type in the text box on the right. Drag the text on the picture to place it, pull a corner to make it bigger, and use the round handle to rotate it. You can add as many text layers as you like and edit any of them later by selecting it.

Can I combine two photos or put one picture on top of another?

Yes. Open the first photo, then choose Image or paste a second one. It lands on top as its own layer. Resize and crop it, lower its opacity or try a blend mode such as Multiply or Screen. Drag layers in the Layers list to change which one is in front.

Can I rotate or flip just one layer?

Yes. Select the layer and use the rotate and flip buttons in the panel, or drag its round handle for any angle. To rotate or flip the whole picture instead, use the Canvas menu.

Which file types can I open and save?

You can open JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF (the first frame), BMP, SVG, HEIC photos from an iPhone and layered PSD files. You can save PNG, JPG or WebP with a quality slider and a size option, copy the result to the clipboard, or save a layered PSD to keep editing later.

Does it work on a phone, Chromebook or Mac?

Yes. It runs in any modern browser on Windows, Mac, Linux and ChromeOS, and on iPhone and Android. On touch screens you drag with one finger and pinch with two to zoom.

More image tools that stay on your device

Cut out a subject with the background remover, erase unwanted things with remove object from photo, or hide faces with blur face, then bring the result in as a layer. To change many files at once, use the image resizer. Before you share a photo, strip its location with the photo metadata remover.
