Add text to a photo in your browser

This page opens the photo editor with text front and center. As soon as your photo opens, a text box appears near the bottom and the text panel is ready for typing. Each piece of text is its own layer, so you can add a title, a caption and a small credit line and style each one differently. Seven one-click looks (Caption, Meme, Highlight, Label, Elegant, Handwritten and Watermark) give you a good starting point, and every setting can be changed afterwards: font, size, bold, italic, alignment, line spacing, letter spacing, outline, shadow and background box.

How to add text to a photo

  1. Choose Open File and pick your photo, or paste one with Ctrl+V. A text box is added for you.
  2. Type your words in the text box on the right. Press Enter to start a new line.
  3. Pick a style from the bar above the photo, or choose your own font, color, outline, shadow and background.
  4. Drag the text to move it, pull a corner to resize it and use the round handle to tilt it. Pink guides show when it is centered.
  5. Choose Save image and download a PNG, JPG or WebP at full resolution.

Example: a quote over a holiday photo

Open a beach photo and choose the Elegant style. Type the quote on two lines, center it, and raise the shadow blur so the words stay readable over the bright sky. Add a second text layer with the Caption style for the author name, make it smaller and place it below. Export a JPG for Instagram, or a PNG if you want the sharpest edges on the letters.

What to expect from the result

The editor adds new text on top of a photo. It cannot read or replace words that are already part of the picture: those are pixels, not text. To hide old text, cover it with a shape or a text background box in a matching color. Curved or warped text is not available yet. Fonts are limited to the 14 included web fonts and 5 common system fonts.

Add text to photo FAQ

How do I add text to a picture for free?

Open the picture on this page, type in the text box that appears and drag the words where you want them. Style them with the buttons above the photo, then choose Save image. It is free with no watermark and no account.

Can I edit text that is already in a photo?

Not directly. Text in a photo is part of the image, so it cannot be retyped. You can cover it with a shape or a text box with a solid background, then type the new wording on top. AI text-replacement tools exist, but they upload your photo to a server.

How do I make text readable on a busy photo?

Add an outline in a dark color, turn on the drop shadow and increase its blur, or switch on a background box with some transparency. Bold, wide fonts such as Anton, Bebas Neue or Montserrat also read well at small sizes.

Can I add more than one text box?

Yes. Each text box is a separate layer. Add as many as you need, style them differently and change any of them later by clicking it on the photo or in the Layers list.

Is it really free? Is there a watermark?

Yes, it is free with no watermark, no daily save limit, no premium fonts and no sign-up. Every feature on the page is available to everyone.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The editor runs in your browser tab and reads your files directly from your device. There is no upload step, no account and no server copy. When you close the tab, the working copy is gone unless you saved it.

More image tools that stay on your device

Cut out a subject with the background remover, erase unwanted things with remove object from photo, or hide faces with blur face, then bring the result in as a layer. To change many files at once, use the image resizer. Before you share a photo, strip its location with the photo metadata remover.
