A Christmas budget planner that adds up as you shop

A Christmas budget planner helps you decide how much to spend before December gets expensive, and then keeps you to it. Enter one total for Christmas, add the people (and things like Christmas dinner or decorations) you need to pay for, and give each line a budget, either by hand or with Split evenly. As you add gift ideas and mark them bought, the planner shows what you have spent, what your remaining ideas will cost, and how much is left, for each person and overall. It replaces a Christmas budget spreadsheet or template with something you can use on your phone in the shop.

How to plan a Christmas budget

  1. Enter your total Christmas budget. If you are not sure, start with what you spent last year or what you can save from now until December.
  2. Add every person and every other cost, such as food, decorations, cards or travel, as its own line.
  3. Press Split evenly, then adjust: close family usually get more, and coworkers or teachers less.
  4. Add gift ideas with prices. The light green part of each bar shows what your ideas will cost before you buy.
  5. Mark gifts Bought as you shop and keep an eye on Left. Red means a person or the whole plan is over budget.

Why use this christmas budget planner

  • Budget before you shopSee whether your ideas fit the budget before spending anything, not when the card statement arrives.
  • Total and per-personOne overall budget plus a budget per person, with a warning when per-person budgets add up to more than the total.
  • No spreadsheet skillsTotals, remaining money and progress bars update as you type. Nothing to set up.
  • Private by designYour budget and gift plan stay on your device. No bank connection, no account and no email.

Common uses

  • Families on a fixed budget. Decide a total in November and split it fairly between kids, partners and relatives.
  • Students and first jobs. Keep gifts for friends and family affordable with small per-person budgets.
  • Whole holiday spending. Add lines for Christmas dinner, decorations, cards and travel alongside gifts.
  • Saving up. Set the budget in October and check how much is still to buy as payday comes round.

How much to spend on Christmas gifts

  • Start from what you can afford without debt, not from what others spend. Christmas spending that ends on a credit card costs more by spring.
  • Many families divide the budget by closeness: the biggest share for partner and kids, a middle share for parents and siblings, and a small fixed amount for coworkers, teachers and neighbors.
  • Leave 10 to 15% of the total unassigned for things you forget: wrapping paper, batteries, a last-minute guest.
  • Gifts marked Bought, Wrapped or Given count as spent. Ideas count as still to buy, so you see whether your whole plan fits before you shop.
  • Big family? Suggest a Secret Santa draw so everyone buys one good gift instead of many small ones.

Example: $450 for five lines

The total budget is $450, split as Mom $120, Dad $100, Sam $60, Grandma $50 and Teachers and coworkers $60, which leaves $60 unassigned for extras. With the scarf, coffee grinder, framed photo and chocolates bought, $190 is spent. The remaining ideas (a photo book, a board game and $40 of gift cards) add $120, so the whole plan comes to $310 and $260 of the budget is left.

What to expect from the result

This is a planning tool, not a bank app: it does not connect to accounts or read receipts, so prices are what you type in. It works in one currency per plan. Plans are saved in this browser only and do not sync between devices.

Christmas Budget Planner questions

How do I make a Christmas budget?

Decide a total you can afford, list everyone you buy for and any other Christmas costs, give each a share, then track gifts against those budgets as you shop. This planner does the adding up for you.

How much should I spend on Christmas gifts?

There is no right number. Base it on what you can pay without borrowing. Many people give the biggest share to their partner and children, a middle amount to parents and siblings, and a small fixed amount to everyone else.

Can it split my budget evenly?

Yes. Enter a total budget, add your people and press Split evenly. Amounts are split to the cent, and you can change any of them afterwards.

Can I include food and decorations?

Yes. Add a line called Christmas dinner, Decorations or Travel, give it a budget, and add costs as items. They count toward your total like any person.

Is there a Christmas budget template I can print?

Yes. Download PDF or Print gives a page with your total, spent, still to buy and left, plus every person with their budget and gifts.

Is my list stored online?

No. Your lists and gift plan are saved in this browser’s local storage on your device, so they are still there when you come back. Nothing is sent to our server. A share link carries a copy of the list inside the link itself, after the # sign, which browsers do not send to websites.
