A Dear Santa letter template you fill in together

Writing to Santa is one of the best parts of Christmas for young kids, but a blank page is hard for a five-year-old. This letter to Santa template gives the letter its shape: "Dear Santa", a line with the child’s name and age, a few sentences about why they have been good, a list of wishes with stars for the ones they want most, and "Love from" with their name. You type it in together on a phone or computer, then print a decorated letter with a red and green border, ruled lines for anything they want to add in their own handwriting, and a box to draw Santa a picture.

How to write a letter to Santa with this template

  1. Type your child’s name and age. They appear in the first line and the signature.
  2. Write a few words about why they have been good this year. Let them tell you, and keep their words.
  3. Add their wishes one by one. Mark the ones they want most as Top wish, which prints a red star.
  4. Choose a couple of blank lines if they want to write something themselves.
  5. Press Print or Download PDF, then let them sign it, draw a picture and post it to the North Pole.

Why use this letter to santa template

  • Personal, not genericTheir own name, age, words and wishes, rather than a pre-printed letter with a few blanks.
  • Room to draw and writeRuled lines and a picture box make it their letter, not just yours.
  • A list for the grown-ups tooKeep the wishes as a list, switch the style to a normal wish list and share it with grandparents.
  • Free and privateNo sign-up and no email. The letter is created on your device and nothing about your child is sent anywhere.

Common uses

  • Family tradition. Write the letter together on the first weekend of December and keep a copy each year.
  • Siblings. Make a separate letter for each child with New list.
  • Teachers and classrooms. Print letters for a class activity, with blank lines for children to write their own wishes.
  • Grandparents. Share the wish list part with relatives who want to help Santa out.

Tips for a magical letter to Santa

  • Let your child dictate and type their words as they say them. Spelling mistakes on the handwritten lines are part of the charm.
  • Encourage a thank-you or a question for Santa, such as how the reindeer are doing.
  • Keep the wish list short: three to five wishes is plenty for younger kids, with one or two marked as Top wish.
  • In the US, letters addressed to Santa Claus, 123 Elf Road, North Pole, 88888 can be answered through the USPS Operation Santa program. Check their current dates before posting.
  • Keep a copy of each year’s letter. They are lovely to look back on.

Example: Leo’s letter to Santa

Leo is 6. His letter reads: "Dear Santa, My name is Leo and I am 6 years old. I have been good this year. I helped with the dishes, I shared my toys with my sister and I learned to ride my bike all by myself. Please say hello to Rudolph." His wishes are a red bike with a bell and dinosaur books (both Top wish), an art set with lots of colors, and a puppy (or a toy one). Two blank lines are left for him to add wishes in pen, and he draws Santa’s sleigh in the picture box before signing "Love from, Leo".

What to expect from the result

The letter fits on one page for a typical list; very long lists continue on a second decorated page. Emoji are not supported in the PDF fonts. The tool prints the letter but does not post it; use your national postal service’s Santa program if you want a reply.
