What is a random adjective generator?
An adjective describes a noun: a gloomy castle, a brave knight, a fizzy drink. This generator picks adjectives at random from about 5,900 English adjectives, from simple words like soft and tiny to rarer ones you meet in books. Use them to describe characters and settings, to swap a tired word like "nice" for something more precise, or to practice comparatives like bigger and biggest. Filters let you choose the first letter, the ending, the length and the number of syllables, so you can also pull out every common adjective ending in -ful or -ous for a spelling lesson.
How to use the random adjective generator
- Word type is already set to Adjectives. Choose Common for everyday words or Rare for unusual ones.
- Add a first letter or an ending if you need a pattern, for example adjectives ending in "ous" or "ful".
- Set how many adjectives you want and press Generate.
- Tap one to copy it, or copy the whole set as a list.

Where the words come from
The dictionary list was built from three free, openly licensed sources. Word frequency comes from the 12dicts word lists by Alan Beale (public domain), which sort English words into frequency classes. Parts of speech come from WordNet 3.0 from Princeton University, keeping only the word types each word is actually used as. Syllable counts come from the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary from Carnegie Mellon University. Rude, hateful and adult words were then removed. Licence texts are in this file.

Example: describe a character in three words
Set How many to 3 and How common to Less common, then press Generate. Use the three adjectives to describe a new character, then write one sentence that shows each trait without naming it. For a quick warm-up, type "ful" in Ends with and choose Common to get words like careful and playful.
What to expect from the result
Adjectives are given in their base form, so the list has "happy" but not "happier" or "happiest". Words that are also nouns or verbs, like "light" or "fast", are included because they work as adjectives. Participles that are normally used as adjectives, such as "excited" and "interesting", are included; other verb forms are not. There is no positive or negative filter, but insults and offensive words are not in the list.
Random adjective generator questions
What is an adjective?
An adjective is a word that describes a noun or pronoun: its size (tiny), color (crimson), shape (round), feeling (anxious) or quality (honest). In English it usually comes before the noun or after a verb like "is".
How do I find adjectives that start with a certain letter?
Type the letter in Starts with. For example, A with Common gives everyday adjectives such as angry and awake. The count under the Generate button tells you how many match.
Can I get adjectives with a certain ending?
Yes. Type the ending in Ends with: "ful" for careful and playful, "ous" for curious and famous, "less" for careless, or "y" for adjectives like fuzzy and shiny.
Are comparatives like "bigger" included?
No. Each adjective appears once in its base form. That makes the list handy for a comparatives exercise: generate five adjectives and ask for the -er and -est forms.
Is it free, and is anything sent to a server?
It is free with no sign-up, no limits and nothing to install. The word lists load into your browser and every pick happens on your device, so nothing you choose or type is sent anywhere. Once the page has loaded, it keeps working without a connection.
